Because often you get your wish, and…
When you get it, it sometimes turns against you! It’s even worse when we DON’T listen to warnings from others – or ignore red flags – or heed that inner, nagging voice! So now Republicans have their President-elect. Trump! And I wonder how that feels in private. Because Trump and his beliefs do not jive with Conservative Republicans and their beliefs.
However, republicans were so blinded by Supreme Court appointments and “repealing” Obamacare” that they jumped into bed with Trump. Now whatever Trump does reflects on them! My prediction is: The same wave that swept them into office will also sweep them back out…except the ebbing wave could be a Tsunami!
If I was advising the Republican Party, here’s what I’d tell them:
Take the moral high road. Take a strong stance. Forget about the Supreme Court. Judges will not dictate how Americans live their lives. If you try to use the courts to put restrictions on people or ram your personal beliefs down others throats, you will unleash a tide of civil unrest and opposition that will hurt not only the economy, but America’s reputation and your party’s credibility and prospects.
Remember, REMEMBER, that MORE people voted AGAINST Trump than FOR Trump. All those people who voted 3rd parties, 3rd candidates or write-ins also voted AGAINST Trump too!
Plus many of the people who voted FOR Trump do not necessarily like Trump or even support Trump or the GOP. They just chose to thumb their noses against “the establishment” and TRY Trump for size. These voters can return Trump in 4 years (if by then we still have a democracy!)…or demand a mid-term exchange in 2 years!
Very few republicans came out against Trump and stuck to their principles.
Most of them, like Speaker Paul Ryan and that spineless Utah Representative Jason Chaffetz, flip-flopped and wavered when they thought of their own political futures. They rushed to reject Trump when polls showed he was losing – then rushed to bow at the altar of Trump when it seemed like he was winning. Do they think Trump will EVER forget they did not support him during most of his campaign!
Republicans have a shock coming – a MAJOR shock. Because if they have not yet figured it out yet, Trump will do things only one way: TRUMP’S way, and he won’t care whether that advances or decreases “Republican goals”, especially as he’s NOT beholden to them for money or connections or advice. Trump is interested only in advancing one brand: TRUMP!
And I for one, can’t wait!
- I can’t wait to see how Trump deals with Russia and Putin – and see how that fits with GOP goals.
- Can’t wait to see how he deals with foreign interventions – and how that fits with GOP goals.
- Can’t wait to see how he deals with Immigration Reform – and Muslims – and how that fits with GOP goals.
- Can’t wait to see how he goes about cutting the debt – and how that fits with GOP goals.
- Can’t wait to see how many white supremacists he places in positions of power…and how that fits with GOP protestations of non-racism.
- Can’t wait to see how many family members Trump invites to the swamp…and how this plays out with Republicans attacks on “Pay for Play”.
Finally, I also wish to remind Republicans that the results of this election DO NOT reflect a long-term trend. So far, this election remains an anomaly UNLESS Trump delivers, brings never-Trumpers into the fold, does not get involved in “Pay for Play” scandals related to his business dealings, does NOT alienate those who voted for him and/or DOES NOT further repulse those who did NOT vote for him!
Guess if anyone can do this, it is Donald Trump. I, for one, am willing to give him a chance…
Which is MORE than Republicans gave to President Obama. Around this time in 2008, right after President Obama was first elected, Republicans were meeting in secret to plot and plan how to undermine Obama and pledging loyalty to their “Just Say NO!” approach. Yet today, those very same republicans are urging people to support the new president and give him a chance. Go figure!
Hypocrites. DRAIN THE SWAMP, Mr. Trump!!! We’re watching and waiting with extra nets, thigh-high waders and some stun guns and harpoons for the many toothy alligators, sharks and other vermin lurking below the surface.
And DO NOT forget the vultures circling overhead!
Or the establishment rattlesnakes swimming around you, with tape on their rattlers! Said rattlers (Giuliani, Gingrich, et al) see YOU as their meal-ticket to positions they would NEVER otherwise gain. Because they are so yesterday, their return date is past…even to their own fellow republicans who DO NOT want them, would not vote for them or even hire them – except to hand them a 10-foot pole (30 foot pole?) to propel themselves deeper into the swamp!!!
I suspect many voters already have buyers remorse. Too bad. No returns until 2020. Don’t lose that receipt!

Here comes Paul Ryan…the one republican who ALWAYS believed in Donald Trump…now his new BFF!
Ryan is part of the problem with Washington – and I hope he is sidelined in the Trump administration. But he likely won’t…
Ryan just held a press conference (11/9/2016) and said GOP chair Reince Priebus worked to “build” the party. Whom is he fooling?
The GOP is not being “built”! It is being demolished and reconstituted – and we’ll see where Ryan fits in! Is he gonna be part of the foundation, the chimney or just a partition?
First he was for Trump, then he was anti-Trump, then he was partially lukewarm Trump. Now he is what? Trump, Trump yea!!!
Hypocrite A-kisser! But then he is republican!
The modern-day left-wing RADICALS who protest against the people who live in mansions like these…take money from people who live in mansions like these!
So, you want to PROTEST Trump? And…?
Are you going to make us aware of something about Trump WE DON’T ALREADY KNOW? WHAT IS your point? (Apart from exercising your democratic right to protest, to gather, to speak — which, incidentally, you try to DENY to others.)
Do you have some shocking EXPOSE about Trump? For example: is Trump really Satan in disguise — OR Hitler OR Elvis? Or even Tupac?
IF you are going to proclaim that Trump is misogynistic, bombastic, racist, imperialist, narcissistic, unrealistic, an attention-getter, race-baiter, not to mention jet-setter…WE KNOW!!!
We TRULY don’t NEED you to point out Mr. Trump’s flaws. Those of us who’ve been following the Primaries, debates and Caucuses, news and talk-shows…we KNOW. Even people who are NOT following just know – it’s blowing in the wind! CAN’t miss it!
We’re unlikely to see a placard at your protest and go: “Oooohh – No Wall!” So, you want to occupy the Capitol and will “demand that Congress listen to the People and take immediate action to save our democracy. And we won’t leave until they do or until they send thousands of us to jail.”
Bring paper to write your last will and testament – or enough money for bail. Plan to say there until you die! Or someone sells something on eBay to raise money to bail you…
I don’t see Mitch McConnell or Jeff Sessions granting any concessions to you…that they won’t give to President Obama. Or maybe they’ll turn tail and run….who knows?
Now why would thousands of you want to go to jail to make Congress LISTEN to you. How stupid is that? There is a much EASIER WAY to make Congress listen to you. It’s called an Election and it’s coming up in November. If you VOTE in the same masses that you are protesting with – then the political landscape will change…and Congress will listen.
Sending “thousands” of you to jail means building MORE jails which you oppose! Don’t BE silly…well, I know it’s HARD, but, really – DON’T be silly! Try!!!
Maybe, you will cause a riot and Trump’s supports will go: “Just look at those free-speech killing Liberals trying to trump Trump. Let’s go home. I really can’t vote for somebody that Liberals don’t like!”
Please stay home! DO NOT go to Philly, (Philadelphia) the City of Brotherly Love, to DISRUPT Trump…
Do not interfere with Trump…LEAVE Trump alone.
Nothing you do will derail Trump. Everything you do may likely STRENGTHEN Trump. In addition, you will make Democrats look bad. Crazy commies!
Republicans are already HANDING you the election gift-wrapped with a “you’re fired” bow! Why is it so hard for you to be quiet – and silent – and just watch!? Why must you always want to do? WHY?
I loathe extremes, equally…be they anarchists on the LEFT or Separatists on the RIGHT!
Mr. Soros, republicans claim YOU are funding the anti-Trump Protesters. If you really, really want to help…let me count the ways:
• I need a house. Nothing expensive. Just 3 bedrooms, 2 1/2 baths, biggish yard, could probably fit on your patio…
• Many of the “protesters” need help with their student/other loans
• Help some families facing foreclosure
• Come to Boston and pay for Summer Camp for inner city kids
• Housing groups desperately NEED funding to help tenants fight off higher rents and displacement due to gentrification
• Help build a pleasant housing complex for the working poor who are being displaced by sky-high rents
• Firefighters need new equipment
• Police need money to run stay-out-of-trouble programs for troubled kids
• Excellent, non-egoistic third-party candidates need funding
• Need I go on?
Rupert Murdoch (glasses) net worth: 12 Billion and George Soros…23 Billion
Far be it for ME to tell those “millionaires and billionaires” on Wall Street whose greed is killing America (are you on Wall Street Mr. Soros?) HOW to spend their money – but we’d all be BETTER SERVED…if you invested in the above…instead of chaos!
No hatin’ in the city of Brotherly Love, bro…
We’d ALSO be better off if Rupert Murdock hadn’t imposed his “outlook” (to put it mildly) on America (via Fox News) and ended up making half the population hate each other. I think Murdock and Fox News (News? ha!) are largely responsible for creating today’s GOP chaos. Let’s not have another millionaire or billionaire starting another trend. Think politics BEFORE Fox…
PS: Any groups want to protest that one person owns so much living space? I will fund those protests…shouldn’t cost more that $20. I can afford that…

Or, to put it bluntly: The Emperor Has No Clothes!
Did you hear the latest news story about Romney and Republicans – how prominent Republicans are criticizing Romney for just TALKING without offering any SUBSTANCE? Who knew they had it in them?
Of course this is TYPICAL Mitt Romney – we in Massachusetts can tell that to the rest of America – and DID tell America, but did America listen? Heck NO. Republicans let Romney buy the election with his millions (Romney spent 6-million-dollars of his own money on the governor’s race in Massachusetts) because they thought those very same millions would crush Obama.
The Wall Street Journal is owned by a conservative, republican-sympathizer/donor Rupert Murdoch, who also owns Fox News. When leading conservatives feel an itch to make a point in the mainstream media, the same “mainstream media” they HATE so much, one of the places they use to express their opinion is in the Wall Street Journal.
In an editorial in the Journal Tuesday (9/11/12), conservatives wrote: “Mr. Romney’s pre-existing political calculation seems to be that he can win the election without having to explain the economic moment or even his own policies.” It is NOT democrats saying that – it is Romney’s OWN fellow Conservatives calling their party nominee’s position: “pre-existing political calculation.” Do you think that they are just finally getting it? NO, No, no.
They KNEW of his pre-existing political calculation BEFORE the primary; they KNEW about it when they turned their backs on Jon Huntsman, they KNEW about it when they embraced him at the convention. So does that make them equally guilty…because some of them like commentator George Will were never in Mitt Romney’s corner and most are still NOT in his corner!
NOW, though, they want Romney to come up with specifics! Seriously!? You want specifics from somebody who says one thing yesterday, something else today and yet a different thing tomorrow about the SAME issue. Like:
- Universal Health Care is good!
According to one website that tracks Mitt Romney’s positions on the Issues: the idea of COMPULSORY health insurance was first put forward by REPUBLICANS! The idea first came from conservative think tank The Heritage Foundation in the late 1980s, when Democrats were pushing employers to provide health insurance. Republicans (ever the protector of big business) suggested that instead of forcing EMPLOYERS to pay for the coverage why not make EVERY AMERICAN buy health insurance? And so we got the “Individual mandate”.
Naturally, with the HYPOCRISY of Republicans, THEY turned away from their own idea!!! Apparently, in the early 1990s, many Republicans championed the “Individual Mandate”. Then President Clinton came up with a plan to FORCE companies to cover employees…but Republicans KILLED it 1994.
When Mitt Romney became governor of my home state of Massachusetts (2003), HE resurrected the idea of the “individual mandate.” Under his universal insurance scheme “Romneycare” whenever a Massachusetts resident files STATE taxes, he/she MUST show that he/she has Health Insurance, wither private or state (called Mass Health) OR you face about $200 in fines.
n 2006 as then governor of Massachusetts Mitt Romney called it “A Republican way of reforming the market.” and that “To have people show up at a hospital when they get sick, and expect someone else to pay, that’s a Democratic approach.”
OK Mr. Romney…
BUT that was what he said when he was governor.
During the Republican Primary when his Republican challenger Rick Santorum pounded Romney on Health Care Reform, Mitt Romney suddenly HATED universal health care and “individual mandates”.
To win the nomination, Romney displayed what conservative republicans now call his: pre-existing political calculation and turned his back on the ONLY, the SINGLE, the ONE star in his portfolio as governor of Massachusetts and decided that the Massachusetts “model” worked just for MA but would not work for the rest of America.
So he bought the Tea Party conservative’s vote by insisting that HE, Mitt Romney would REPEAL “Obamacare” on day one of getting into the White House.
THAT WAS IN THE RECENT PAST.
Romney, having secured the Tea Party endorsement, of a tepid sort at the Republican National Convention, strayed off script this week and stated that HE will not repeal EVERY aspect of the federal health care act – Romney says he will actually KEEP some parts which are popular with Americans. Oh dear me…I can imagine the seismic gasp (sort of like Ann Romney’s collective sighs. See my August 31, post: Repackaging and Reselling Mitt Romney) that ran down the spines of hard-line Tea Party conservatives!
So where does that leave Mitt Romney today? Ask Republicans…
Their nominee’s pre-existing political calculation turned around and bit him in his (you know!). By distancing himself from health care reform in Massachusetts he has nothing left to run on since Healthcare Reform IS the SUM TOTAL of HIS MASSACHUSETTS RECORD. On Foreign Policy he’s shown there’s nothing there to talk about! So Romney decided to run on Bain Capital instead, another piece of pre-existing political calculation that also turned around to bite him in the (you know!).
So now Republicans want their golden, nah, scrap that (pun intended) their brass boy to come up with specifics. I FOR ONE CAN’T WAIT! Because the grandiose house of cards that he’s building in the sky with Paul Ryan as Atlas is sure to come tumbling down with specifics. The numbers DON’T add up. Let’s see Romney juggle them!
Why? Because I can come to you and tell you: I am going to get my parents mansion and millions of dollars pretty soon and make myself very popular until you find out that I plan to kill my parents to get those riches!
So please Mr. Romney, show me how -22 and +2 = +$20. Yes, Mr. Romney, if I owe $22 and someone gives me $2 to pay on the bill, please tell America how I end up with $22! (Unless I rob or borrow $20 from somewhere…? Is that what you are planning to do, Mr. Romney?)
Like my bro former President Bill Clinton said: “It’s Arithmetic!”
The MATH DOES NOT ADD UP – and now even conservatives in Mr. Romney’s own party are beginning to see that: THE EMPEROR HAS NO CLOTHES!
Full Text of Speech by The Honorable Deval Patrick, Governor of Massachusetts to the Democratic National Convention: Tuesday, September 4, 2012
Good evening, Democrats! Are you fired up? Are you ready to go? I hope so.
This is the election of a lifetime. Because more than any one candidate or policy, what’s at stake is the American dream. That dream—the ability to imagine a better way for ourselves and our families and then reach for it—is central to who we are and what we stand for as a nation. Whether that dream endures for another generation depends on you and me. It depends on who leads us, too.
In Massachusetts, we know Mitt Romney. By the time he left office, Massachusetts was 47th in the nation in job creation—during better economic times—and household income in our state was declining. He cut education deeper than anywhere else in America. Roads and bridges were crumbling. Business taxes were up, and business confidence was down.
Our clean energy potential was stalled. And we had a structural budget deficit. Mitt Romney talks a lot about all the things he’s fixed. I can tell you that Massachusetts wasn’t one of them. He’s a fine fellow and a great salesman, but as governor he was more interested in having the job than doing it.
When I came to office, we set out on a different course: investing in ourselves and our future. And today Massachusetts leads the nation in economic competitiveness, student achievement, health care coverage, life sciences and biotech, energy efficiency and veterans’ services. Today, with the help of the Obama administration, we are rebuilding our roads and bridges and expanding broadband access.
Today we’re out of the deficit hole Mr. Romney left, and we’ve achieved the highest bond rating in our history. Today—with labor at the table—we’ve made the reforms in our pension and benefits systems, our schools, our transportation system and more that Mr. Romney only talked about. And today in Massachusetts, you can also marry whomever you love. We have much more still to do. But we are on a better track because we placed our faith not in trickle-down fantasies and divisive rhetoric but in our values and common sense.
The same choice faces the nation today. All that today’s Republicans are saying is that if we just shrink government, cut taxes, crush unions and wait, all will be well. Never mind that those are the very policies that got us into recession to begin with! Never mind that not one of the governors who preached that gospel in Tampa last week has the results to show for it. But we Democrats owe America more than a strong argument for what we are against. We need to be just as strong about what we are for.
The question is: What do we believe? We believe in an economy that grows opportunity out to the middle class and the marginalized, not just up to the well connected. We believe that freedom means keeping government out of our most private affairs, including out of a woman’s decision whether to keep an unwanted pregnancy and everybody’s decision about whom to marry.
We believe that we owe the next generation a better country than we found and that every American has a stake in that. We believe that in times like these we should turn to each other, not on each other. We believe that government has a role to play, not in solving every problem in everybody’s life but in helping people help themselves to the American dream. That’s what Democrats believe.
If we want to win elections in November and keep our country moving forward, if we want to earn the privilege to lead, it’s time for Democrats to stiffen our backbone and stand up for what we believe. Quit waiting for pundits or polls or super PACs to tell us who the next president or senator or congressman is going to be. We’re Americans.
We shape our own future. Let’s start by standing up for President Barack Obama.
- This is the president who delivered the security of affordable health care to every single American after 90 years of trying. This is the president who brought Osama bin Laden to justice, who ended the war in Iraq and is ending the war in Afghanistan.
- This is the president who ended “don’t ask, don’t tell” so that love of country, not love of another, determines fitness for military service. Who made equal pay for equal work the law of the land. This is the president who saved the American auto industry from extinction, the American financial industry from self-destruction, and the American economy from depression. Who added over 4.5 million private sector jobs in the last two-plus years, more jobs than George W. Bush added in eight.
The list of accomplishments is long, impressive and barely told—even more so when you consider that congressional Republicans have made obstruction itself the centerpiece of their governing strategy. With a record and a vision like that, I will not stand by and let him be bullied out of office—and neither should you, and neither should you and neither should you.
What’s at stake is real. The Orchard Gardens Elementary School in Boston was in trouble. Its record was poor, its spirit was broken, and its reputation was a wreck. No matter how bad things were in other urban schools in the city, people would say, “At least we’re not Orchard Gardens.”
Today, thanks to a host of new tools, many enacted with the help of the Obama administration, Orchard Gardens is turning itself around. Teaching standards and accountabilities are higher. The school day is longer and filled with experiential learning, art, exercise and music.
The head of pediatric psychology from a local hospital comes to consult with faculty and parents on the toughest personal situations in students’ home lives. Attendance is up, thanks to a mentoring initiative. In less than a year, Orchard Gardens went from one of the worst schools in the district to one of the best in the state. The whole school community is engaged and proud.
So am I. At the end of my visit a year and a half ago, the first grade—led by a veteran teacher—gathered to recite Dr. King’s “I have a dream” speech. When I started to applaud, the teacher said, “not yet.” Then she began to ask those six- and seven-year-olds questions: “What does ‘creed’ mean?” “What does ‘nullification’ mean?” “Where is Stone Mountain?” And as the hands shot up, I realized that she had taught the children not just to memorize that speech but to understand it.
Today’s Republicans and their nominee for president tell us that those first-graders are on their own—on their own to deal with their poverty; with ill-prepared young parents, maybe who speak English as a second language; with an underfunded school; with neighborhood crime and blight; with no access to nutritious food and no place for their mom to cash a paycheck; with a job market that needs skills they don’t have; with no way to pay for college.
But those Orchard Gardens kids should not be left on their own. Those children are America’s children, too, yours and mine. And among them are the future scientists, entrepreneurs, teachers, artists, engineers, laborers and civic leaders we desperately need. For this country to rise, they must rise—and they and their cause must have a champion in the White House.
That champion is Barack Obama. That cause is the American dream. Let’s fight for that. Let’s canvass and phone bank and get out the vote for that. Let’s go tell everyone we meet that, when the American dream is at stake, you want Barack Obama in charge.
Thank you. God bless you. And God bless the United States.
This Orchard Gardens K-8 Pilot school was SO bad that when it opened the school sent out a notice to parents in their zone, like ME, inviting me to send my son there and I said no thanks. Instead, I put my son in a Boston program – METCO (that buses inner city kids to high performing suburban schools) and sent him to a town 14 miles away!
So when governor Patrick says the school was bad, IT WAS BAD. Orchard Gardens is a public housing development in Boston’s Roxbury neighborhood, in an area plagued by crime and drugs. IT IS REAL. It is not a promise in a campaign speech!!! When Romney and his running mate Mitt Ryan cut funding for the poor, this school will suffer either directly or INdirectly through welfare cuts.
I would prefer to see these kids parents’ continue to get benefits SO their kids remain in a stable enough home environment to allow them to EXCEL at school so THEY won’t be on welfare themselves…than cut welfare NOW and end up with the cycle of ANOTHER DEPENDENT GENERATION. Of course that’s the Republican way. Mishandle one problem, create two or more problems.
Since our two-party system makes provision for a Republican to also run in the race for President of America, shouldn’t that Republican BE Condoleezza Rice?
Condi versus Obama.
The Republicans don’t KNOW a good thing when they have it – the black male “rock star” president vs. the black female “rock star” former Secretary of State! And NOT just any female either, this is a woman who comes from the face of segregated America: Birmingham, Alabama.
Republicans should have gone in droves to Condoleezza Rice and begged, threatened, cajoled, seduced, threatened — maybe even sent former Vice President Dick Cheney to FORCE Rice to be their nominee. They could have with one GO broken the perception that they are racist, dismissed the notion that the reason so many of them hate Obama is because he is black and just sucked in the female vote. Va-va-vroom…
But NO. They had to go with the anti-Condoleezza. Pass on spicy for bland…
Can you envision a debate between Barak Obama and Condoleezza Rice? WHO would NOT watch? The WORLD would watch…
Republicans could have bagged Colin Powell. But NO. Condi and Powell DO NOT SIT WELL WITH the racist Tea Party arm now controlling the Republican Party.
Let us look at Condoleezza Rice’s speech to the 2012 Republican National Convention in Tampa/Florida August 29. All you’re getting is Ryan’s FLUFF shoved down your throat!
Rice starts by saying:
“We gather here at a time of significance and challenge. This young century has been a difficult one…
(She refers to 9-11 then adds) “From that day on…our sense of vulnerability and our concepts of security were never the same again.
Then, in 2008, the global financial and economic crisis would stun us. And it still reverberates as we deal with unemployment and economic uncertainty and bad policies that cast a pall over an American economy and a recovery that is
desperately needed at home and abroad.
(She goes on to refer to developments in the Middle East and what America should do about Syria and Iran) “Russia and China prevent a response, and everyone asks, where does America stand?”
So far I agree with everything she’s said.
America’s sense of vulnerability and our concepts of security will NEVER be the same again.
- The financial crisis did NOT stun me because anyone with an ounce of sense could foresee this coming. Some people were warning and urging caution.
- YES! We are still reverberating from the massive job losses and economic uncertainty that started under Republican rule with former President George W. Bush’s wars and tax cuts…and other bad policies. These policies cast a pall over America’s economy and the recovery that is desperately needed at home and abroad.
- And yes. Russia and China are blocking American intervention.
Condi says the world is asking: “Where does America stand? Since world war II, the United States has had an answer to that question. We stand for free peoples and free markets. We will defend and support them. We will sustain a balance of power that favors freedom.
She goes on to make the case for INTERVENTIONISM – praising the soldiers who put their lives on the line to secure American Freedom and then goes on to say the question of the hour is:
- “Where does America stand? You see when the friends or foes alike don’t know the answer to that question, unambiguously and clearly, the world is likely to be a more dangerous and chaotic place.” There is no choice, because one of two things will happen if we don’t lead. Either no one will lead and there will be chaos, or someone will fill the vacuum who does not share our values.
I don’t agree with her there on her method. Rice subscribes to the Bush Doctrine of Preemptive strikes (the one Sarah Palin had never heard of). Rice, (like Bush, Cheney, Bush’s Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld and his deputy Paul Wolfowitz and many Republicans) believe that wherever around the world some dictator rattles his sabers, especially against “Freedom”, America should pull out her big guns and go bang, bang!
BUT, IF the rattling is coming from a huge powerhouse like China or Russia – THEN obviously we CAN’T invade THEM, so what do we do then?
NOW there is a FUNDAMENTAL question that Americans need to answer: HOW do you deal with Russia and China?
Romney and Ryan say THEY will haul China before the World Trade Organization. I’m sure that will work on so many levels. Because if you earn $200-thousand-a year, then borrow 20 million dollars from your neighbor and he’s holding your house and your cars as collateral, then of course the one thing you want to do is sue your neighbor.
Would you try to talk to him, bring him cookies, offer to watch his kids, kiss his (you know) unobtrusively of course, ’cause he’s got you over a barrel? A barrel YOU allowed HIM to put you over with your run-away conspicuous consumption which you could NOT afford? If you’re a Democrat you play nice. You hate to kiss his (you know) but you’re smart and you like your nice, big house and fancy car.
If you’re a Republican, you being the MACHO moron that you are, you tell your neighbor, the one holding your loan – “Go —- yourself!” And then sit at home and smirk as you imagine him renegotiating a new loan for you with a lower interest rate. That’s what Republicans expect. That they will step on your toes and you will be so grateful, you will still love them, because they are, well, Republicans! These people have NO concept of ACTION – REACTION. OF ACTION – CONSEQUENCE. (Naturally, they blame the consequences on someone else!)
Back to Rice:
- We must work for an open, global economy, and pursue free and fair trade, to grow our exports and our influence abroad. If you are worried about the rise of China, just consider this — the United States has…ratified only three trade agreements in the last few years, and those were negotiated in the Bush administration. China has signed 15 free trade agreements and is in the progress of negotiating as many as 18 more. Sadly, we are abandoning the field of free and fair trade and it will come back to haunt us. AGREE
- We must not allow the chance to attain energy independence to slip from our grasp. We are blessed with a gift of oil and gas resources here in North America, and we must develop them. We can develop them sensitively, we can develop them securing our environment, but we must develop them. And we have the ingenuity to develop alternatives sources of energy. AGREE
(Rice says Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan will rebuild the foundation of our strength, the American economy — stimulating private sector growth and stimulating small business entrepreneurship…BALONEY!)
- When the world looks at us today, they see an American government that cannot live within its means. They see an American government that continues to borrow money, that will mortgage the future of generations to come. The world knows that when a nation loses control of its finances, it eventually loses control of its destiny. That is not the America that has inspired people to follow our lead. AGREE.
Now we see here WHAT substance IS! Yes she’s got her ideology – and I don’t always agree. But by gosh she’s got some foundations in her speech that BOTH parties can use as STARTING POINTS to a productive dialog – ASSUMING they want to?
According to Rice:
- You see, the essence of America, what really unites us, is not nationality or ethnicity or religion. It is an idea. And what an idea it is. That you can come from humble circumstances and you can do great things, that it does not matter where you came from, it matters where you are going. SO TRUE!
- My fellow Americans, ours has never been a narrative of grievance and entitlement. We have never believed that I am doing poorly because you are doing well. We have never been jealous of one another and never envious of each others’ successes. SO TRUE!
Republicans applauded here – because they’ve bought into the silly dialog that Romney and the other Republicans put forward to mask their questionable financial practices – the one that says those of us who question the Romney’s finances do so because we are envious. I can’t speak for everybody, there may be some who envy the Romney’s for their lifestyle. But I’m not envious. Just practice what you preach.
But Rice could also be saying: Stop your silly mouthing that criticism of financial wrongdoing is “envy” because until you came up with that nonsense “ours has never been a narrative of grievance and entitlement. We have never believed that I am doing poorly because you are doing well. We have never been jealous of one another and never envious of each others’ successes.”
- No…ours has been a belief in opportunity. And it has been a constant struggle, long and hard, up and down, to try to extend the benefits of the American dream to all. But that American ideal is indeed in danger today. There is no country, no, not even a rising China that can do more harm to us than we can do to ourselves if we do not do the hard work before us here at home. AGAIN – SO TRUE!
On Immigration Reform:
- More than at any other time in history, greatness is built on mobilizing human potential and ambition…People have come here from all over because they have believed our creed of opportunity and limitless horizons. They have come here from the world’s most impoverished nations just to make a decent wage. And they have come here from advanced societies as engineers and scientists that fuel the knowledge-based revolution in the Silicon Valley of California, in the Research Triangle of North Carolina, along Route 128 in Massachusetts, in Austin, Texas, and across this great land.
- We must continue to welcome the world’s most ambitious people to be a part of us. In that way, we stay young and optimistic and determined. We need immigration laws that protect our borders, meet our economic needs, and yet show that we are a compassionate nation of immigrants.
- We have been successful too because Americans have known that one’s status of birth is not a permanent condition. Americans have believed that you might not be able to control your circumstances but you can control your response to your circumstances.
STOP. RUN THAT BY ME AGAIN!!!???
- Americans have believed that you might not be able to control your circumstances but you can control your RESPONSE to your circumstances.
Oh Condoleezza – I love you. You get it. You really, really do! (Paul Ryan would follow Rice on the podium and shoot down everything Rice says here – but we know that Ryan, like Romney, do NOT GET it. )
- And your greatest ally in controlling your response to your circumstances has been a quality education. But today, today, when I can look at your zip code and I can tell whether you’re going to get a good education, can I honestly say it does not matter where you came from, it matters where you are going? The crisis in K-12 education is a threat to the very fabric of who we are.
- My mom was a teacher. I respect the profession. We need great teachers, not poor ones and not mediocre ones. We have to have high standards for our kids, because self-esteem comes from achievement, not from lax standards and false praise. And we need to give parents greater choice, particularly, particularly poor parents whose kids, very often minorities, are trapped in failing neighborhood schools. This is the civil rights issue of our day.
RUN THAT ONE BY ME AGAIN, TOO!
- “We need to give parents greater choice, particularly, particularly poor parents whose kids, very often minorities, are trapped in failing neighborhood schools. This is the civil rights issue of our day.”
Here’s the TALENT the Republicans have at their fingertips…and see whom (or is it WHAT?) they nominated! And YOU tell ME how STUPID this party is!!!
And so here is the story. The HUMANISING story we cannot manufacture to seduce voters.
- On a personal note, a little girl grows up in Jim Crow Birmingham. The segregated city of the south where her parents cannot take her to a movie theater or to restaurants, but they have convinced that even if she cannot have it hamburger at Woolworths, she can be the president of the United States if she wanted to be, and she becomes the secretary of state.
Then Tea party Boy Dahling Paul Ryan comes on…and he plays to the Party Base, spouts the juvenile nonsense you expect from HIM. I’m looking at Ryan, seeing a pretty…a very pretty empty face. Yes, he is quite good looking.
- “Obama Care comes to more than 2,000 pages of rules, mandates, taxes, fees and fines that have no place in a free country.” HUH? What has No place in a free country? Pages? Rules? Mandates – like the one Mitt Romney slapped on us here in Massachusetts for ROMNEYCARE, our state healthcare for all? Taxes? As in the Supreme Court has decided to call that MANDATE a TAX? Fees and Fines like the ones Romney RAISED on us here in Massachusetts?
According to FactCheck.org: The Massachusetts Department of Administration and Finance put the fee total at $260 million a year and the corporate tax change at $174 million a year, and the independent Massachusetts Taxpayers Foundation said both fees and taxes totaled $740 million to $750 million a year (split about evenly between fees and corporate taxes). But Romney CAN SAY HE DID NOT RAISE TAXES…because being Romney, he came up with a devious, UNDERHAND creative accounting way to do so!
- College graduates should not have to live out their 20s in their childhood bedrooms, staring up at fading Obama posters and wondering when they can move out and get going with life.
NO Mr. Ryan, college grads should NOT have to live back home in their childhood bedrooms if you and your Republican buddies had supported the Student Loan Reform bill.
New York Times headline: MAY 17, 2012, 5:33 AM
Republicans in Senate Block Bill on Student Loan Rates
WASHINGTON — Senate Republicans on Tuesday blocked consideration of a Democratic bill to prevent the doubling of some student loan interest rates, leaving the legislation in limbo less than two months before rates on subsidized federal loans are set to shoot upward.
Democrats arrayed college students to plead for a yes vote. The bill was blocked on party lines.
Along party lines, the Senate voted 52 to 45 on a key procedural motion, failing to reach the 60 votes needed to begin debating the measure.
The vote was the Senate Republicans’ 21st successful filibuster of a Democratic bill this Congress, which started in January 2011. Republicans have blocked consideration of President Obama’s full jobs proposal, as well as legislation repealing tax breaks for oil companies, helping local governments pay teachers and first responders, and setting a minimum tax rate for households earning more than $1 million a year.
Republicans say the measures were flawed and potentially harmful to the economic recovery.
In an awkward move Wednesday, Senate Republicans voted overwhelmingly for two GOP-written budgets that would each let student loan interest rates spike in July, even as they insist they want to avert such an outcome.
Budget measures by Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) (NOTE WHOM) and Sen. Pat Toomey (R-PA) went down 41-58 and 42-57, respectively. Both let Stafford loan rates double from 3.4 to 6.8 percent, which President Obama and Democrats have been pushing to prevent. Mitt Romney and GOP leaders say they want to extend the existing rate but differ on how to pay for it. (SEE THE hypocrisy?)
The budget votes were largely a Republican effort to embarrass President Obama and Democrats for failing to coalesce around a long-term fiscal vision.
Then Ryan deals his coup de grace. He discounts the very point that Rice made – that some people are locked into their lot.
- Listen to the way we’re already spoken to already, as if everyone is stuck in some class or station in life, victims of circumstances beyond our control, with government there to help us cope with our fate…
HE cannot get the point that Rice makes…that one might not be able to control one’s circumstances but yes, one can control one’s response to one’s circumstances.
Mr. Ryan if you’re at the bottom of a well, which would you prefer? For a fireman to come and throw you a rope — or look down at you, laugh and say: Dig yourself out. Even with broken fingernails! Sure a determined person CAN dig him/herself out, but it’s a lot easier with that rope – or a spoon – or a shovel!
Ryan says leadership is missing from the White House – like there was an overflow of LEADERSHIP when George W. Bush was in the White House. Unless of course we factor in Bush’s egomaniacal Vice President Dick Cheney, who lived up to his name by leading Bush around by his…well, YOU know, Dick.
Maybe I’m biased…but so far, I am with Condi.
My Dream is that: “One day…one day, politicians will speak the truth. That this nation will rise up and demand capable leaders, men and women of integrity, black, white, Hispanic, Asian and Amerindian.
I have a dream that one day, a politician’s worth will no longer be determined by how much money he can raise and spend, but by the sum of his ideas, by his or her competence and not by his/her debating ability.
I have a dream that one day politicians will be chosen, not by the color of their skin or party, but by the inclusiveness of their vision.
Yes, I have a dream that one day, on these white steps of the Capitol, we will see a Republican and a Democrat stand side by side at a table of National Interest and Unity and shout: Free at last, Free at last. Thank God – we are free at last from partisan bickering!”
Sometimes when I’m too annoyed – I just refuse to write. Times I just want to rant! Like NOW…
When Mitt Romney’s running mate, Paul Ryan, the Representative from Wisconsin pays more in taxes than his multi-millionaire venture capitalist boss!
Romney’s adjusted gross income for 2010 was nearly 22 million but HIS TAX RATE WAS 13 PERCENT. Ah the loopholes of INVESTMENT INCOME! Ryan whose adjusted gross EARNED income was about 200-thousand in 2010, (300-thousand with some investment income, in 2011) paid taxes at a rate of 20-percent. Still Ryan stands there and says: That’s fine. I have less, let me pay more, it’s the American way!
Instead of fixing THAT tax loophole which we should WANT to fix but which will likely never be fixed…especially with the money being pumped this year into the campaigns of those who plan to ensure it stays UN-fixed – we turn around and buy into the cool aid that “Oh. You hate success!” Moronic. Yeah, the unsuccessful hate success so much they spend their time craving sucess and finding ways, straight and crooked, to achieve this elusive success!
Ever wonder why you’re being sold the American Dream when you’re really buying into a nightmare? After 300 years of Capitalism, how many millionaires do we have? If the system is geared for success, why are there so many failures? Large swathes of the population are simply left behind, abandoned – year after year after year? People living in Third World like sections of America, hidden and forgotten until there’s a flood? Then forgotten again…
So many of the so-called middle class are knock, knocking on the door to Millioniarehood – and will live and die like worker bees and never make it! Oh yes, some assets with the house and retirement plan (if there IS one), some stock, a possible savings account may add up to a million or more, on paper – but do they have a Mitt Romney lifestyle?
Can these so called Middle Class build a house with an elevator for cars? Spend $77-thousand on a horse – then still have 21 million to spend?
Do you have a movie star, sports athlete lifestyle? Can you buy a condo at a posh 5-star hotel like the Four Seasons overlooking the Boston Common where former Red Sox slugger Manny Ramirez lived?
According to the Census Bureau, the Median Income changed very little over the last 30 years with middle-income families earning 11-percent more in 2010 than they did in 1980…but the incomes of the richest 5-percent increased by 42-percent.
How many stress-filled years do the chasers of the “American Dream” have to commute? Long hours to work every day, braving dark, un-plowed winter mornings – working themselves ragged yet still struggling to maintain the trappings and put the kids through college, pay off the mortgage and go on vacation? Is that a dream? Or a paycheck or two away from disaster nightmare?
So someone says: “We created MORE new millionaires this year – ask: HOW MANY POOR DID YOU CREATE THIS YEAR? Nearly 3 million people slipped into poverty in the United States in 2011. Life is good for the 5-percent of the population that holds nearly ALL of the wealth. Yes, indeed that is a system that works…and SHOULD be protected.
Does nobody see maybe there is something wrong here? Maybe, just maybe we need to do some tweaking…a work in progress instead of a fait accompli?
- How can I not BE annoyed….???
When Paul Ryan says he is a STAUNCH AND STALWART champion of Medicare which is costing the government billions of dollars to provide health care for one segment of the population but HE does not want the government to provide similar healthcare coverage to other sectors of the population?
- How can I not BE annoyed….???
When Paul Ryan says he is so against the Stimulus that he just shudders with revulsion at the waste – oh the draining of government funds down the drain – how President Obama just flushed all those dollars down the toilet — then find out that HE, Paul Ryan asked for Stimulus dollars for his district. Well, he didn’t KNOW they were Stimulus Funds – he though the money was coming from China…or a Republican National Committee super PAC!
South Carolina Senator Strom Thurmond hated black people too…but fathered a child with his family’s black maid. Hypocrisy in government is not new!
By the way Ohio Republican, House Speaker John Boehner got millions of Stimulus dollars too for his District 8…including a garage, a transit center and The Banks Waterfront Project in Cincinnati.
Isn’t it strange how these Republicans preach one thing and actually DO something else? The other side does it too? Well THAT gives your guys the moral high ground…a very BELIEVABLE high road that is so justified, because if two minuses make a plus – then surely two wrongs do make a right!?
Wonder how often these congressmen go to confessional – to God or priest.
“Oh father…dear Jesus…I have sinned. I lied, I accused the Democrats of hypocrisy, but I’m just as hypocritical…I said they took Stimulus money, BUT I DID TOO…oh father…have I done wrong?”
“NO, no my son…God is good, God is forgiving…God understands how politics works. We expect Democrats, their political leaders, to lie and cheat and steal…(and have sex with men in airport restrooms) but Republicans ONLY do these things to get votes…so you can win the election and institute Christian Law on this God forsaking nation. So I understand, my child – that in this case, YOUR end justifies the means.”
“Er, forgive me, Jesus, but that incident in the airport bathroom, that was Larry Craig, a Republican…”
“I know my son (wink, wink) I know…”
From the Gospel according to John Boehner…the missing book of Rove.
Paul Ryan, THE Romney anointed “Intellectual Leader” of the Republicans, says president Obama is going back to the “old ways” of doing things. Obama keeps embracing the failed policies of the past…so why don’t we instead continue the policies of George Bush that worked so well IN THE FUTURE and implement MORE tax cuts?
Is there ANY Republican in America, at least ONE, who will stand up and say: “NO. Please let us NOT go back to this. Please let us try something NEW? Or do they perhaps see this as NEW?
I guess to THEM it IS new because it’s being proposed by a NEW presidential contender! (Some would agree that Romney, a man who spent 8 years running for president, 4 years as Massachusetts governor and who also ran for the U.S Senate against Ted Kennedy (and failed) is not new, but whom am I to say otherwise?
So according to Paul Ryan, please let us NOT go back to old ways of doing things, YES, let us charge forward with the NEW old idea of Tax cuts for the wealthy.
I don’t give a hoot about the nonsense you’re telling me, BOTH of you parties, about who’ll cut billions from Medicare or add billions to Medicare. Take that darn money and have ONE Health Care program that covers everybody!
Seniors are covered – Children are covered and the rest of America is what? Disposable? Is health care only for those who can afford it? All this NEW technology to scan every minute body cell we see on the news – that’s for whom? Those with money only?
The same people who authorize billions of dollars for a useless war in Iraq, who send billions to countries who go their own arrogant way, the same Congressmen who waste billions on a stupid LOSING “War on Drugs” that has been going on for decades with what to show for it – gun fights along the US/Mexico border?
The same lawmakers who turn blind eyes to government WASTE, like malfunctioning defense equipment costing billions of dollars or the department of Agriculture PAYING rich land holders NOT to farm land they have no intentions of farming, anyway — will BALK, RESIST and CHAFE over spending money to ensure Americans have health care coverage or that fire stations stay open.
Do Republicans really think that Romney will deport immigrants? Yeah! Wait. He’ll deal with China…and Russia too! Hey Mr. Putin, Romney is coming — with Ryan behind him! YOU scared yet?
Stupidity should be a crime…that carries nothing less than life in prison!
Congressman Paul Ryan, House Budget Committee chair on ABC’s This Week: 07/01/12
“The broken promises and the hypocrisy are becoming breathtaking from the president who says one thing to get this past Congress and then another thing to get it past the Supreme Court….look at the hypocrisy. The president on your show said this is not a tax. Then he sent his solicitor general to the Supreme Court to argue that it is a tax in order to get this past the Supreme Court.”
Well imagine Republicans actually ADMITTING to a concept called “Hypocrisy” and with a straight face too.
Dear Mr. Ryan…
I can’t defend President Obama on whether he knew it was a tax or a mandate. He did not call me to share his thoughts nor was I privy to their deliberations. I am going by what he said. (Yes, I know…he’s a politician too, bless his soul! Pinch of salt, etc…).
- Obama said it was a Penalty.
- In Massachusetts Romney said his RomneyCare carried a Penalty – he did not call it a tax.
- Now the Supreme Court says the penalty in ObamaCare is a tax
- Does this mean that the penalty in RomneyCare is a tax too? I’m sure you will say NO! Because of course the federal laws that apply to the rest of America DO NOT apply here in Massachusetts – which is why we are so liberal and which is why a Penalty here is a “tax” over there!
- Health Care Debate 101…
I listened to the commentary – listened to Romney’s reaction – listened to Republicans and Democrats and everybody in between and what I came away with is this: We spent the last 4 years fighting over Health Care Reform…and it’s not over! Apparently it has not yet even begun. We are going to waste the next 4 years fighting over Health Care. Is America for real?
The health care you are fighting over has not bankrupted Massachusetts – 98 percent of our residents are covered. Yes it is expensive, but those costs are beginning to come down because more people are getting PREVENTATIVE care. Yes, more people are:
- Seeing doctors who are catching problems before they become critical.
- These doctors are coaching people on healthy lifestyles that PREVENT DISEASE
- WHAT IS THERE NOT TO LIKE?
- It did not STOP job creation – we are tops among the nation under our new Democratic governor, Obama pal Deval Patrick.
- Why would you not want that kind of statistic in every state?
- Why do the hypocrites who rail against universal health care try to sneak in here to get ours?
- Why don’t they go to Paul Ryan and ask HIM to pay for THEIR health care?
- Why do you let Republicans play political GAMES with you and the health of you and your family/loved ones — instead of demanding that they sit down with Democrats and look at parts of the bill that need fixing – AND FIX IT.
- Whom do you think YOU are hurting when you don’t have health Care, don’t buy it – then get into an accident and don’t have it? Who is going to pay for you? Surely NOT the government? Because you don’t want the government involved in Health Care, remember…? I know, John Boehner will pay your bill. Lucky you!
Republicans have been killing Health Care reform for decades, including the effort by Hillary Clinton. Remember that? WHAT DO THEY HAVE AGAINST HEALTH CARE FOR ALL – and why have they NOT put forward their own viable plan…and PASSED it…when they ruled Congress and Newt Gingrich was Emperor?
Boy they thought that they HAD President Obama. They could NOT get Congress to overturn the Health Care Act so they decided to send it to their buddies at the Supreme Court whom they expected to rule in their favor. What a shock it must have been…when the decision came! La-di-dah-do!!! What a Maalox Moment!
See, Republicans think that Americans are stupid – that voters don’t see through their shenanigans – that sane people do not understand that Republicans use underhand and devious ways to RAM their bigoted, biased, out of touch ideas and platforms on the rest of us.
But you do. We do.
We understand that Republicans use (or TRY to use) the Supreme Court (and other courts) to force their beliefs on the rest of us. When the courts side with them: great judges, constitutional scholars. When the courts don’t : “activist” judges, liberal elitists!
Their plan is to people the courts with conservatives who will rule along party ideology…then because they oppose something (usually somebody or group’s civil rights) like gay marriage, sue to block gay marriage.
Here’s an example of Republicans using the courts to force their twisted concepts on the rest of us: House GOP leaders in Connecticut plan to ask the Supreme Court to rule on the constitutionality of the 1996 federal law that bans federal marriage benefits for same-sex couples who are legally married. They don’t like gays and don’t support the Defense of marriage Act so of course it’s unconstitutional…and if it’s not, then by God they will make it!!!
The other tack they use is to stir up public opinion and get people to vote for their unconstitutional ideas believing that if they rile enough people up against gay marriage and these people vote for some referendum saying that gay marriage is bad – then that makes it legal – because the people have spoken!
Yes, we the same people who thought:
- The sun revolved around the Earth
- That the earth was flat and when you got to the end you’d fall off
- That slavery should NOT be abolished
- That blacks should not get the vote
- That women should not get the vote
- That blacks and whites should not marry or integrate
- That gays cannot serve in the military
- That men and women do not deserve equal pay
- and so on…
We the people who self-righteously made all the above decisions and more…are really in a position to shove aside our bigotry and self-serving blarney and grant power to others, especially to others we don’t like or agree with.
If you look at the civil rights that the courts have granted to people, to minority groups, to wronged classes, to under-represented groups…think where we would BE if the courts had not stepped in.
So the law can work both ways. And Republicans try to use both sides to further their twisted political agenda…
Republicans don’t give a damn about fairness or ethics – if the constitution said to skin cats, they’d stick to the Constitution to the letter of the Law and skin every cat they could find. Know what Jesus had to say about that (Luke 13: 10-16) when he was chastised…chastised for working on the Sabbath because he healed a woman who had been sick for 18-years? Jesus called the ruler of the synagogue (John Boehner in an earlier life?) a hypocrite! Republicans and Jesus would NOT agree…
So to get back to the Supreme Court and John Roberts. I’m not on board. Still to come:
- Affirmative Action (which is good and bad and responsible for the advancement of many minorities)
- Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA).
It is my opinion that Roberts wanted to depolarize/de-politicize the Supreme Court so he chose an argument about Taxation which I can’t follow…It is a Tax but it’s not a Tax? Whatever…! Bottom line is that Romney apparently slapped a TAX on us here in Massachusetts with his Health Care Mandate…and every year I have to show I have Health Care or I pay a Tax penalty – which is not a penalty – it’s now a Tax “Tax”.
By calling the mandate a “Tax” Roberts provided fodder for Republicans to kick up a political furor…
Paul Ryan says Roberts “had to rewrite the statute in order to call this a tax.”
So if Roberts can find a convenient loophole to muddy the legal waters so he can save the reputation of his court – does that happen/can that happen/has that happened in other cases as well?
Do I now look at Supreme Court rulings as:
- Strict interpretation of the law?
- A face saver?
- A compromise?
- An ideological ruling?
Meantime, pundits are urging Mitt Romney to stop running as a business man and show some substance…
If Romney does NOT run as a businessman- what else is there?
Romney is known for being:
- A businessman (of the loan shark kind.)
- “Saving” the Olympics (by getting a financial bail-out from Washington).
- Governor of Massachusetts (by proxy! His only achievement, Universal Health Care with a mandate he endorsed by signing the bill with LIBERAL Ted Kennedy standing behind him – he ran away from it to please conservatives. Now he can’t jog back (watch him try in the debates), especially with the Supreme Court ruling. So what’s left? THERE IS NO SUBSTANCE. He can try to manufacture some “substance” but it comes across as phony…
When the layers will be stripped away in the debates – you’ll see how much substance he has…
