DACA Back In Congress

Trump’s subliminal message to Congress: Damned if You Do – or Don’t fix Immigration/DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals)!

DACA is an Executive Order President Obama signed in 2012 after Congress refused to act, again, on Comprehensive Immigration Reform. It grants temporary protected status to undocumented young people who entered the country illegally with their parents. Recipients have to meet certain standards and in return, get work authorization and a social security number.

President Donald Trump today (9/5/2017) gave the program a 6 month lease and asked Congress to Act — or DACA ends!

Boston Globe

This “ending DACA by NOT ending DACA” is a BRILLIANT political strategy by President Trump.

I don’t agree with ending DACA. I fully support DACA and want these young kids (AND their parents, especially parents with kids who are US citizens and/or lawful PERMANENT Residents) to get lawful status. However, President Trump campaigned on an anti-immigrant platform and it was beyond naive of anyone to believe that HE would support DACA, AGAINST the wishes of his base of hard-line anti-immigrant supporters.

While Trump may not be very good at “presidenting”, HE is unsurpassed at political strategizing!

teapar

With one stroke Trump sent his supporters/base into ecstasy and kicked the difficult, potentially career-derailing DACA decision to Congress. Bravo! Take THAT Paul Ryan. And am I GLAD to see it come back to haunt you!!!

Remember when Immigration Reform passed in the Senate – and Republicans, led by then House Speaker John Boehner, REFUSED to bring the bill to the FLOOR OF THE HOUSE for a vote? Well, tee-hee…had they DONE that, they WOULD NOT be facing this dilemma today, because dilemma it is…

If republicans, led by Speaker Paul Ryan KILL DACA, then President Trump GETS what he wants at the expense of Ryan and other republicans. Trump can claim: “I didn’t tell Congress to kill DACA; I just asked them to fix it. Left to me, I’d have let DACA stand but Congress decided…” Hispanics then flock to the polls in droves (hopefully) to defeat republicans and Ryan, Mitchell lose their Majority positions…which would lead Trump (and Steve Bannon, ex-White House chief strategist/senior counselor) to celebrate!

Wall.jpg

If republicans, led by Ryan, legitimize DACA, then Trump can tell his base: “I didn’t do it. I ended it and sent it to them to do their job. They: Ryan, Mitch McConnell (Republican, Senate majority leader), etc – these swamp republicans, THEY saved DACA!” Hard-line republicans then flock to primaries to defeat these Trump blockers!

Either way, Trump wins with his base and hard-line anti-immigrant voices. Plus he also gets to blame and possibly get rid of republicans like Ryan and McConnell whom he sees as opponents.

GOP leaders: Ryan (blue tie) & McConnel

See the Machiavellian sub-plot?

I wonder, with hindsight, what the GOP would do now if they could go BACK to 2005-2007 when BI-PARTISAN efforts led by Democrat Senator Ted Kennedy and Republican President George W. Bush tried and failed to pass the Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act of 2007 because HOUSE REPUBLICANS KILLED IT!

Tea Party.jpgYou get what you sow! If you had done the right thing THEN, instead of playing politics and catering to a BASE that NOW opposes YOU, your life would be MUCH easier today because there would likely be NO Donald Trump…since immigration would be OFF the table, hence NO wall to tout!

As for Democrats, I detest, deplore and abhor their blatant HYPOCRISY on Immigration Reform. When they had the perfect opportunity to pass COMPREHENSIVE Immigration Reform with NO republican votes in 2009, they instead embraced Health Care (which has proven to be a NOOSE around their necks ever since).

I’m not sure, wasn’t there, but word out of DC is that Michelle Obama argued passionately FOR Immigration Reform and Obama White House Chief of Staff, Rahm Emmanuel, argued against.

  • WHY didn’t YOU act, President Obama?
  • Why did you not tackle Immigration Reform BEFORE Health Care or TOGETHER with Health Care, back in 2009?
  • Why did you hastily (and cynically?) cobble together DACA (June 2012) and later DAPA (November 2014) in the run-up to elections?
  • What happens NOW to the PARENTS of DACA if Congress protects and/or deports the DACA kids?
  • I campaigned for Obama in 2008 and have never lifted a finger to do anything since because I felt very strongly, then as now, that President Obama and Democrats FAILED undocumented (and other immigrants) on Immigration Reform.

dcrally

So in my opinion, President Obama can “speak up” NOW, but the time I wanted him to SPEAK UP was when he was IN the White House with a MAJORITY in the House and Senate!

I wrote to President Obama in December 2008. (I gave a copy to Obama friend, then Massachusetts governor Deval Patrick to hand to the President), but I guess since I am NOT a Harvard erudite like Larry Summers…my voice was/is too plebeian, too inconsequential, to be either passed on or considered!

So president Obama, if you did not read that 2008 letter, one of many  I sent to you on immigration, I’m posting it, in part, below:

December 17, 2008

ATTENTION: President Elect Obama

Dear Mr. Obama,

Now that you are preparing to take over the leadership of this great country, putting your team together and soliciting input from the public, I’m hoping IMMIGRATION is high on your list.

The economy and its attendant issues do take precedence, right now. Healthcare is also important. But IMMIGRATION must not be overlooked as a top priority, either. Remember, during the campaign, when the financial crisis first broke, and republican Senator (John) McCain “suspended” his campaign and headed to Washington, you said: A president has to be able to do more than one thing at once. So I hope that you/your administration can work on both the Economy…AND Immigration too!

Dreamer sign.jpgIt makes smart POLITICAL sense:

Hispanics, a large and growing voting bloc, shifted away from republicans in the 2008 election and voted overwhelmingly for you. I doubt you believe that was due solely to your charm, intellect and good looks (though I admit those are considerable). They gravitated to you and Democrats because they hope YOU will reform the nation’s broken immigration system and make it possible for immigrants living here, (the most visible of whom are Hispanic), to achieve legal status. They were also turned off by the Republican’s vitriolic tone during the recent national debate over illegal immigration. The GOP’s racist, divisive and insulting comments, spurred by some politicians and talk-show hosts, demonized all Hispanics – both illegal and legal.

Reform immigration! You may not be able to claim immediate victory on the wars or the economy by the time mid-term elections roll around, but you can claim immediate victory on immigration reform.

In addition: The money immigrants send back home account for a large chunk of the GDP in many countries, like El Salvador. Without those remittances, observers say those countries would likely descend into chaos and contribute to regional instability. That would cost America a lot more.

DACA innovation.jpg

  • It makes smart ECONOMIC sense:

Millions of immigrants are willing, able and ready to buy some of those foreclosed and abandoned properties now flooding the market and blighting neighborhoods. Immigrants are also eager and willing to buy cars, now bloating dealer’s inventories. Legal status unleashes the power of millions of consumers who can now apply for credit, including bank loans, travel and open businesses.

Fixes a BROKEN system:

Many of the millions of undocumented immigrants living here no longer have lives to return to back home. Immigrants have set down roots and built lives here, in this country. Although many immigrants live in fear that allows them to be victimized without recourse, most do not want to go back and have nothing to go back to.

There are news reports of military wives who are being deported because their husbands died in combat (Iraq/Afghanistan) before all the necessary paperwork was filed or completed. They’re being told to go…but their US-born children can stay!

Talented, promising kids of illegal immigrants who are attending school here, or have graduated, cannot go to college. These “straight A” kids and honor students fall in the cracks instead of becoming the teachers, scientists and other skilled workers America so badly needs.

Immigration Inaction

 –  In Massachusetts, an outstanding math teacher, who had been teaching for years, was/is facing deportation because of a paperwork glitch.

MEANTIME, immigration agents round up illegal immigrants with criminal backgrounds then release them, because federal/state resources are overwhelmed. Yet ICE picks up factory workers, tears them from their families, and deports them.

Foreign artists/students/scientists and other professionals have to jump through so many hoops to get here, they give up in frustration and go elsewhere, taking valuable brain power and innovation with them.

The TIMING is perfect:

Democrats now have a majority in both houses. And I’m sure there are some republicans who realize their hard-line stance cost them Hispanic votes. They will want to get these votes back….and be more amenable. As you said during the campaign, NOW IS THE TIME!

The support is there. Despite the shouting coming from the right, a majority of Americans favor giving undocumented immigrants a path to citizenship. Unions, businesses, politicians, churches, community groups, the legal profession as well as immigration advocates and enforcers, urge reform.

YES YOU CAN…

YES, WE CAN!

Respectfully,

DACA how.jpg

In My opinion, my BITTER, disgruntled, defeated, dejected, frustrated, feeling rejected, let-down by Democrats opinion, Democrats OUTRAGE now is way too little, far too late….and their lack of action is beginning to backfire on them with Trump’s DACA edict.

Memo to Democrats:

Take a page from the Donald Trump playbook and LEARN how to please your base, instead of pleasing Rham Emmanuel!

Boehner: Resign or be voted out! Not Sure? Call Gingrich!

Former Secretary of State, Colin Powell who served BEFORE Rice.

Former Secretary of State, Colin Powell who served BEFORE Rice.

Colin Powell called it about Iraq – when he said: If we break it, we own it! Except NOW we don’t want it!

Today a force of militants calling themselves the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) is nearing Baghdad, after marching across Iraq like a plague of locusts, destroying all opposition in it’s path. Al Queda is afraid of them – does that make you nervous?

Isis — Egyptian goddess – friend to the downtrodden. The name means: throne! Married her brother Osiris – and used her magic to restore his life after his body parts were scattered across the world. Symbolic, yes?

I am as outraged today as I was in 2003 when U.S. King George II (Bush the Younger) bombed Iraq. I still don’t understand WHY America invaded Iraq and toppled Saddam Hussein. I know of all the given reasons:  U.S. gas and oil-guzzling interests; revenge for a slight to the president’s father (U.S King George the First) or Weapons Of Mass Destruction (WMDs). But I still don’t get it…Why? Why, why?

Islamic State of Iraq and Syria

Islamic State of Iraq and Syria

Now Republicans – look back and tell me Iraq and the Middle East were NOT more stable with Saddam in power?

Naturally republicans are blaming Obama – because he withdrew US troops, took them out of a situation they could NOT win. We should have left them to be blown up to bits every day -to return home with missing limbs and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) the Veteran’s Administration is now faking it treated! Iraq today is NOT all about Obama and his choices. Obama had to treat an outbreak amid a republican-induced epidemic! Right or wrong, neither choice (leave troops/pull troops) could fix Iraq…just delay the inevitable.

Veterans Administration

If only republicans would say: “Gosh we messed up big time by invading Iraq, but pulling troops out did not help either”. OK, I’d buy that. But they ALL blame Obama, like what they did was working so well: Every Iraqi was overjoyed with the overthrow of the Saddam regime; the Sunnis were happy, the Shiites were content, the Kurds up north were waving the Iraqi flag and neighboring countries were in raptures! It was one big happy family holding July 4 barbecues; the surge was surging until Obama came along and blew all that hard work (or piece of pie as Republicans probably see it) by sending the troops home!

TEXAS Republican Michael McCaul, Chair of House Committee on Homeland Security, is on TV Sunday morning (6/15) urging the U.S. BACK into Iraq and blaming Obama for the debacle in Iraq. HE DOES NOT SEE THAT THERE WOULD BE NO ISIS WITHOUT THE REPUBLICAN GENERATED PSEUDO SCENARIO THEY SOLD TO GULLIBLE AMERICANS FOR THE GOP’s IMMORAL INVASION OF A COUNTRY THAT WAS NO THREAT. Naturally, send the troops back – and ISIS will just give up. Syria will be magically mended; Iran will stop enriching Uranium…and Israel will no longer want to bomb any of these countries. Magic…

Texas Republican Michael McCaul

Texas Republican Michael McCaul

So republicans want US troops back in Iraq? How about them giving their kids a crash course in Terrorism 101 and sending their pampered offspring to Iraq to face the invading ISIS jihadists? Pull their kids out of their fancy schools and well-paying jobs, give them body armor that is deficient and send them off to Iraq!

And until then, please DON’T ask more mostly poor and disenfranchised kids to lay down their lives for your misguided ideological nonsense. Until every Senator and every Representative is willing to don fatigues and go to Iraq, they need to STOP sending other people’s kids/loved ones to get blown by homemade bombs then return to a broken and underfunded Veteran’s Administration.

Eric Cantor

Eric Cantor

So House MAJORITY Leader, Virginia Republican Eric Cantor lost his reelection bid. Great. They ALL need to lose. House speaker John Boehner should be next…

Lesson for Democrats: Gerrymandering does NOT work! (Not that democrats will listen to no-trust-fund insignificant ME, who can’t afford to pay $50-thousand for a plate of food OR $100-thousand if I brought my son!) However, Listen up Democrats: gerrymandering – creating ideological districts that you think will benefit you – DOES NOT WORK in the long run AND MAY NOT WORK THE WAY YOU THINK IT WILL!

The best district is one where there is an ebb and flow. It is a MIX of ideology, thought, feeling, support, demographics and party loyalty. It is one where people vote for a Republican today but can also vote for a Democrat tomorrow. It is one where the Representative can vote on a popular issue or one he believes IN, even if some constituents DO NOT; a vote that may be in the interest of the country but not necessarily in the best interest of that district OR political party…a district where the majority of a DIVERSE view counts more than the narrow, petty view of a minority.

Gerrymandering by Republicans (Democrats Beware - you do it too!)

Gerrymandering by Republicans (Democrats Beware – you do it too!)

Republicans are sowing the seeds of the gerrymandering districts they created JUST TO CONTROL THE HOUSE. Well you control it now. Nice feeling ain’t it? You created lily-white districts where immigration is not an issue for them. So even though many states and major U.S. cities are reeling from the effects of unchecked immigration, even if farmers and many other industries are dependent on immigrant labor, even if the LEGAL immigration system is inadequate, even if the current impasse on immigration is allowing millions of UNDOCUMENTED workers to remain in the shadows, so what? Doesn’t affect me – don’t care!

Well, here’s the scenario facing the GOP:

  • Republicans will NEVER win the majority of Hispanic voters with their stand on Immigration. For nearly EVERY Hispanic who can vote, he/she knows of, loves or has a family member WHO IS UNDOCUMENTED and is depending on Immigration Reform to get that person legalized. Hispanics are not PRO Immigration Reform for noble or ideological reasons – they support it because they want their mother, father, uncle, cousin, lover, spouse, best friend, relative, neighbor to BE LEGAL!
    Anti-Immigrant Rally

    Anti-Immigrant Rally

    Anti-immigration

    Anti-immigration

  • That holds true for voters from OTHER immigrant groups. Asians are another large voting bloc that is tied to Immigration Reform. Do Republicans realize the number of Vietnamese, Chinese, Koreans, Philippinos and other nationalities like Haitians, Jamaicans/English Caribbean, Irish, Eastern Europeans, Indians etc who are HERE in the US with similar desires/reasons for Immigration Reform?
They so do...

What would Jesus do? Tea Party talked to Jesus and he told them in an exclusive: “I’d be merciless!”

  • The Tea Party is NOT, repeat NOT popular nationally. How can it be, when we just heard that Cantor also lost in part because he supported the move to compromise on the Government Shutdown. The Tea Party STILL thinks that the government SHOULD HAVE REMAINED CLOSED UNTIL THEY GOT WHAT THEY WANTED. STILL think this is the way to go when America came so CLOSE to the brink of economic, social and political disaster. Yet, they want a repeat – and beyond a repeat, they want the system to crash so they can remake it in their image.Repeal Obamacare
  • Republicans deserve this debacle because they are afraid to kick the Tea Party out. KICK THEM OUT! Take the next 4 years to rebuild and rebrand. Pass Immigration Reform – DON’T push the president to take matters into his own hands. Compromise, roll your sleeves, get working IN THE INTEREST OF THE COUNTRY instead of preserving what works for you and your party. What’s best for any one party may not necessarily be best for America. Think slavery!

Government Shutdown

  • Choose a speaker with guts/cahones who is vested in moving the country (not his career) forward. Because the harder Boehner tries to protect his job and the more he sells his soul to do that, the more the job slips AWAY from him. Trying to please EVERYBODY never works.

Still, maybe the Tea Party win in Virginia will make some “genuine” Republicans step up and say: “Enough. I’m not sending this uncompromising guy to Washington…I want someone who will NOT shut the government down, someone who will cross the aisle, someone who is willing to meet democrats halfway and even sometimes three-quarters of the way, instead of someone who is doggedly holding his ground even when that ground is slipping into the ocean”.

John Boehner

John Boehner

John Boehner is one of the worst House Speakers. To me he’s even worse than Newt Gingrich. At least with Gingrich there was the “Contract With America”. With Boehner there’s what? Crying, I guess… Ironically, Boehner was part of the Republican posse who gave Gingrich the ultimatum: “Resign – or be voted out!” Live by the sword, die by the sword. Well Boehner: Resign or be voted out! Which one…?

Crying works for some people – but won’t work for you Boehner. Now if Michelle Bachman started crying…(don’t say it. Please don’t. Thanks…)

Boo-hoo...who?

Boo-hoo…WHO?

Reform Immigration Rally: Boston Strong!

March for Immigrant Respect and Immigration Reform.

reform6

IMG_5066 IMG_5069Video from a “March for Immigrant Respect and Immigration Reform” organized by The Massachusetts Immigrant & Refugee Advocacy coalition (MIRA).

Immigrants and immigrant advocates/supporters from across Massachusetts gathered at Boston’s historic Copley Square on Saturday, October 5, 2013…before marching to the equally historic Boston Common.

IMG_5083 IMG_5084

  • Public figures including candidates for Boston mayor and city council led the March. Marchers stopped at two Bank of America branches to deliver a letter demanding a public statement against anti-immigrant politics and in support of Immigration Reform…and publicly call on Bank of America to stop supporting Speaker Boehner with campaign contributions.

reform3

The Boston gathering was just ONE of about 200 similar actions organized in 154 cities in 40 states and the District of Columbia, on October 5, 2013…to raise a collective voice for immigrant dignity and respect. Marchers are getting support from 13 House Members, 1 Senator and 2 Governors.

Earlier this week, five U.S. House members introduced HR 5: Border Security, Economic Opportunity and Immigration Modernization Act, a bill that contains bipartisan-backed provisions from the Senate immigration bill, as well as the border security bill passed unanimously by the House Committee on Homeland Security.

reform4

Immigrants and their allies are asking House Speaker John Boehner to let this bill move forward for the well being of immigrant families and the prosperity of our nation. The rally also called on the Massachusetts Congressional delegation to meet with Speaker Boehner and demand immigration reform NOW.

IMG_5059 IMG_5060

THE MESSAGE OF THE BOSTON RALLY:

  1. To demand an end to the deportation practices that have driven 11 million immigrants into the shadows
  2. Demand the House of Representatives pass a comprehensive immigration reform bill with a path to citizenship, which would give immigrants the full respect of the society to which they belong and strengthen the economy to which they contribute.
  3. Call for the passage of important state bills such as the Safe Driving Bill and the Trust Act, measures that would increase the safety of our roads and return real security to our communities.

reform5The march will be held at a crucial moment — the final days in which the U.S. House of Representatives can move forward with an immigration reform bill this year. After the U.S. Senate passed bipartisan immigration legislation (S.744) that includes a pathway to citizenship in June, progress was blocked by House Speaker John Boehner, who refused early this summer to bring any comprehensive bill to the floor of the House.

reforma16a

Now, after a summer of actions in which 26 members of Boehner’s Republican party have declared their support for reform, the combined force of labor, community, ethnic and faith organizations will call for Speaker Boehner to stop blocking the passage of comprehensive immigration reform with a path to citizenship —a concept now supported by a bipartisan majority of representatives.

reform7

The rally calls on all members of the Massachusetts delegation to the House — all of them Democrats —  to raise their voices publicly for consideration of a comprehensive bill, one with a path to citizenship and without militarization of the border.

The rally will begin with a noon and march from Copley square past several branches of Bank of America, which supporters will publicly call to stop supporting Speaker Boehner with campaign contributions.
