|ARIZONA||VOTES (Trump only)||VOTES (Clinton, Johnson, Stein)|
Transcript of text messages with left-winger who went to Washington D.C. to “protest” Trump’s inauguration…
ME (Boston): (Stirring the pot) – Happy Inauguration Day!
HE: Worst day in US history. Here in D.C. with appropriate banner. See you tomorrow at Women’s March in Boston! Trying hard not to throw up
ME: Nope. Not marching against Trump. Wish him well and cutting him some slack until he screws up. Don’t share those sentiments. Dems sore losers
HE: Already has screwed up. BTW on Monday he is proposing 10 trillion in budget cuts over next decade, twice Ryan budget cuts. I’m not a sore loser, don’t get mad, get even! I don’t wish him well…
ME: Childish tantrum! Boo hoo!
HE: Adult patriotism. Why do you identify with this jerk?
ME: Because I like some of what he stands for, and I hope he can turn some things around and because I don’t believe government is the answer … and because I don’t allow others to think for me – right or wrong!!! I’m surrounded by jerks! What’s one more?
…I was playing with his head a bit – pulling his strings. But I DO support the demonstrations (I don’t call them protests)…happening today (1/21/2017) in Boston, in the nation’s Capitol, in other U.S. cities and worldwide. I strongly support people marching peacefully (and in justified cases like the Civil Rights marches, more forcefully) to push for their rights…with respect and civility and a point/message.
What I DON’T support are those anarchists who took to the streets of Washington D.C on Inauguration Day, attacking police, burning cars and trashing people’s property. I don’t support tactics that instead of advancing a cause, push it backward.
But YES, I’m pleased to see the HUGE turnout for the Women’s March the day after Trump’s inauguration. But it’s not enough to just put on a pink hat, walk around a couple blocks with a placard then go home and on election day tell yourself:
- Well, I’m just too tired to go and vote
- There will be a large turnout so if I don’t vote, it does not matter
- My vote doesn’t count
- I don’t like the candidate
- I’ll have time, I’ll go later…I’ll go tomorrow, I’ll go next week!
Then, when a million other people don’t vote, because every single ONE of these people was thinking the VERY same things above, like you who did not vote for Clinton…all depending on someone else to carry the burden for you OR leaving that voting booth feeling sanctimonious for taking a political high road…we then turn out and “protest”! Yet when you had the opportunity to PREVENT all this, YOU DIDN’T.
This table I did above (hope my math is sound) shows what would have happened IF people had voted for Clinton instead of Gary Johnson and Jill Stein. Did these voters really believe that Gary Johnson (aka Mr. Aleppo, in my mind) and Jill Stein (remember “Jill not Hill”?) were better candidates than Hillary Clinton? Did they really believe that Jill Stein would win! Are you OUT of your minds? Now you’re protesting. So not impressed!!!
In my table alone, about A-MILLION people voted for Stein and Johnson. So let this BE a learning election. EVERY VOTE COUNTS and a “protest” vote is a vote FOR the opposition. The ONLY republican “protest” was in Utah where 207-thousand people voted for another republican, Mormon Evan McMullin, instead of Trump.
So hopefully, those people now in the streets who DID NOT vote, or voted Stein or Johnson or blank — WILL vote STRATEGICALLY in future elections and leave their petulant hurt feelings at home in November 2018 and beyond. Because when you SULK and DON’T VOTE for the Party candidate you did not want…you end up with a President and ruling party you also don’t want! (Although, Trump could do so well that everyone will vote for him! Who knows.)
And remember — NOT voting also means that your party loses:
- Other officials
Local results affect our lives in areas closer to home. Trump wasn’t the candidate the GOP establishment wanted. He wasn’t the candidate rank and file republicans wanted. But they rallied around him…while we were asking: “How can they embrace Trump with all the revelations about his treatment of women (alleged), his refusal to release his taxes, the things he said”, etc.
How? Because OF THE SUPREME COURT! They were smarter! FUTURISTIC!
While Democrats were nursing their fragile, HURT feelings, Republicans held their nose and voted FOR Trump, because they were looking ahead and Democrats and other Liberals were IN THE MOMENT, undergoing therapy. GROW UP! No wonder Republicans think we are sissies! We probably are, too!
Let ME count some ways?
Republicans and I finally AGREE on something!
I CANNOT stand Nancy Pelosi…either, and I’m going to check which representatives from MA voted to keep her as House Minority Leader — and to ask them about it. (Seth Moulton did NOT. Good for him!)
Pelosi does not get it, the other democrats who support her DON’T get it…(well, they get fund-raising to get RE-elected!) and the Clinton circle STILL DOESN’T GET IT!
Why the HELL are they still blaming Trump for losing the election? Isn’t that what he’s supposed to do – make the challenger lose?
They don’t get why Trump won. They’re only looking at false news and negative attacks, Russia, the FBI, etc, everything and anything but them and their poor campaign, their plastic candidate, their negativity, their lack of connection, their manipulation behind the scenes, their lack of counter-punch, their arrogant assumptions…and keep missing the economics, disappointments and frustrations of people’s lives, missing the forest for the trees…while they earn millions and we earn zero…but keep asking you to DONATE, DONATE, CHIP IN.
Chip in – you dumb, insensitive (whatever!) With what…you out-of-touch (whatever)! Why can’t YOU chip in some of your millions? I need my 3-dollars to pay my rent. I don’t own an 11-room, 2-million-dollar mansion in Chappaqua. Donate WHAT?
I did NOTHING to support democrats in this election cycle – and that’s NOT because of Trump. It’s because I’m FED UP with democrats, (starting with President Obama), and their inability to connect with the cares of everyday people like me. I’m frustrated with Democrats because of their laissez-faire attitude to Immigration Reform, blaming Republicans for their failure to act, then pandering at election time with DACA. Trump appealed to HIS BASE. You did NOT! Multiply MY feelings by millions of other disgruntled, frustrated “liberals” who feel like me, for various reasons, and you get why Democrats lost. But don’t tell them, let them blame Trump. It’s easier.
I didn’t support Bernie. But if you ask him why Democrats lost, he will NOT lay the blame on Trump. He doesn’t…
At this point I’m actually thinking of going Republican, if they’d have me…eew!
Who knows, maybe Trump, crazy as it seems, MAY work out better for blacks like me!
Should I care if Trump has white supremacists in his cabinet – if he brings jobs and peace/security to my inner city? Or should I keep supporting no supremacists in the cabinet – and instead live with fear and economic depression?
Did I say I CANNOT STAND NANCY PELOSI? I am NOT a Trump hater. 20 million Americans voted for him. He is different. He is crazy. Hell, I’m giving him a chance. 2 years (midterms?) before I get on his case. I want to SEE what he will do, before I crucify him.
Did I say I cannot stand Nancy Pelosi and most of the current hierarchy in the Democratic Party?
Can someone tell me WHY Donna Brazile felt that Hillary Clinton, a seasoned politician, was NOT capable of answering a question from a CNN reporter? WHY she felt a need to slip Clinton the question on the sly beforehand? I find that morally reprehensible. If a candidate CANNOT answer a SIMPLE question off-the-cuff, then you have NO freaking right wanting to be – or BEING, president!
- It’s not like the answer determined whether you went before a firing squad. Yes, in a situation where a wrong answer meant death or dismemberment, by all means, go ahead and “save” your candidate…but really? She needed prep to answer a question on the DEATH PENALTY? Why?
- Did Hillary clinton NOT know that she was going to run for president? Are you telling me that all the while she was Secretary of State, she did NOT know she was running for president and only made THAT decision suddenly, in a great “aha” moment in March 2015? How do you explain her NOT knowing that she should have 2 separate and clearly demarcated servers – one to email daughter Chelsea to ask her to check on Bill – and one to email the State Department and the White House…and to KEEP THEM separate? Why the hell did she NOT know that?
- I wrote to the president in 2008 begging him to tackle Immigration Reform FIRST. But no, he had to go tackle Health Care Reform, (because his mama had insurance issues) and so, he listened to Rahm Emmanuel (his then Chief of Staff) who thought that immigrants should remain a political football that would never deflate. Obama/democrats disregarded counter arguments. Well congratulations on “Obamacare” that unwieldy monstrosity that democrats sold out to the health care lobby. That was a great help. Helped you lose the mid-term, which meant NO immigration reform which pissed off Hispanics and immigrants and led to apathy. Great help! Helped in 2016 too!
- How about Montana Democrat, Max Baucus? HE chaired the Senate Finance Committee and was one of the LEADING architects of Obamacare. According to news reports, Baucus RESISTED including a public option (which would let people choose a government Medicare-like plan, instead of private insurers, and help keep costs down). THAT is understandable, since according to news reports HE, the great and mighty Baucus, got nearly 2-million dollars from the insurers, hospitals and related groups – WHILE HE WAS SPEARHEADING OBAMACARE! Smelling a swamp?
- Do democrats LISTEN to ordinary people who are NOT Harvard’s grads or billionaires or celebrities? I’m no Katy Perry, how can I compete? If I live in the heartland and coal is going out of style and my town is dying, shouldn’t I be glad that I have clean air to breathe – even though I can’t pay my mortgage or feed my family. Ah, all that oxygen filling my stomach! Isn’t the O in O2 really tasty? Hey, the bank will accept the C too, if you tell your loan officer C stands for the Roman Numeral for hundreds!
- Living in the inner city? For the FIRST week in November, three police/fire/EMS responses to my 14-family section, in one week! Fighting, drug use, trespassing. What a life. I look out my peephole and people are injecting drugs, buying drugs, selling drugs. Yep, I’m raring to donate! Yet I’m being asked to CHIP-IN 3-dollars to make the Boston fund-raising quota. F-you! What have you done for me lately?
Republicans are right – Democrats dice and slice voters. Blacks? Hispanics? Asians? Women? Blue-collar? Dog-lovers! Muslims! Gays! Immigrants! BULLSHIT. People.
Still don’t understand, MS. Pelosi? Fund-raising and MONEY DID not win 2016. Gender did NOT win. Experience did not WIN. Get THE freaking MESSAGE. What the hell are you doing for me, immigrant? What the hell are you doing for me – job loser in company deserting to Mexico or India? What the hell are doing for ME, working poor with two jobs earning minimum wage who still CANNOT afford to rent an apartment in Boston where the median rent is about 3-thousand dollars in many neighborhoods?
After all, earning minimum wage in Massachusetts, working 40 hours a week at $10 an hour is $400 BEFORE TAX. That is 16-hundred dollars a week. Holding TWO minimum wage jobs, working 80 hours a week (if you can), is $32-hundred dollars a month. STILL CANNOT MAKE THE RENT…not counting food, travel, clothing, utilities, etc. But hell, we’ll CHIP IN so you can win and cut deals benefitting your rich friends and cronies!
Guess what: Get lost!
Yes, I said it. F-you, Democrats. How much do you earn in Congress. before factoring in the perks and the bribes and the lobbying trips? The dinners/gifts/favors? The insider deals made IN THE SWAMP, on stocks, etc…
PS: And Clinton staffers yelling at Kellyanne Conway (Trump’s campaign manager) and trying to vilify HER for your loss…just, in MY eyes…UNDERSCORES how much YOU still don’t GET it – and yes, your bitterness shows. Ha! HA HA!
JOIN DA CLUB!!!
In other words? MOVEON.LOST!!!
I would like someone, anyone, particularly republicans (and especially Ted Cruz) TO EXPLAIN TO ME HOW ON EARTH he plans to WIN a general election…across an America that does NOT give a fig about his brand of “values” especially those that say gays should NOT be able to marry whomever they choose – and that undocumented immigrants should be rounded up and deported even if they’ve lived in the U.S. for decades!
(I’m not asking how Cruz plans to campaign and what his strategy is). I just want Cruz to explain to me:
1. WHICH are THE states that he sees himself WINNING in a general election?
2. More specifically, among the states that President Obama won, which are the ones Cruz sees will go to him in 2016 ?
3. Does he see himself winning California, New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts etc?
4. Does Cruz see himself winning over Democrats and Independents?
5. Does Cruz see himself winning the BLACK vote?
6. Does Cruz see himself winning the Hispanic vote?
7. Does Cruz see himself winning the Immigrant vote?
8. Does Cruz see himself winning with the Gay/Transgender community?
9. Or do republicans think that they can win a presidential election with only the “conservative” vote?
10. Does Cruz understand that he is winning with only the Tea Party faction within the Republican Party?Unlike Donald Trump, he has so far NOT pulled in a diverse demographic.
Moderate, aka “Establishment” republicans DON’T like Cruz – they don’t want him as their nominee. (Yes, they’re now saying they may hold their nose and vote for him just to oppose Donald Trump) but HE is not their first or even second or any choice. But he thinks that the nation likes him – when his own republicans find him too extreme!
11. The Republican Party is a joke – it has long tried to SUPPRESS voting by poor people, minorities/immigrants. NOW it’s coming up with ways to try to suppress voting by its OWN republicans. That should be easy give the GOP’s history!
The God republicans like to laud so much (when it suits them) is indeed alive — and laughing!
The way I see it, even if every old or poorly educated or rural Tea Party white person who’s never voted turns out to vote for Cruz, (will Trump’s coalition vote for Cruz?) he still needs the rest of us, don’t he? Or do he?
Maybe he don’t – bring it on!
I can already see the ads reminding us about the government shutdown…and threatened shutdowns…and NO compromise…and the efforts he led, SUCCESSFULLY, to DERAIL Immigration Reform and to CHALLENGE Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) and to BLOCK President Obama’s executive Order on Immigration.
Hispanics, the fastest growing voting bloc, just LOVE Ted Cruz. Trump says he would deport the undocumented and “let them come back” with conditions. Cruz says: I’ll round you up and DEPORT you and you can take your U.S. born kids with you plus YOU WILL NOT EVER COME BACK IF I CAN HELP IT! Such Christian charity and compassion…such values!
As of 2013, Cuban immigrants made up nearly 3-percent of the immigrants living in America…that’s MORE than a million Cuban immigrants who, incidentally, are NOT taking U.S. jobs – they’re all somehow working in Florida for Fidel Castro. (I’m NOT bashing YOU, Cuban immigrant. I’m an immigrant too! Just calling out Cruz on immigrants taking U.S. jobs!)
Like I said: BRING IT ON!
Because democrats may not be flocking to the Primaries like republicans are right now, but rest assured, a nominee Cruz WOULD BRING every old or poorly educated or urban black, Hispanic, immigrant, gay person out of the woodwork too!
Did I say “bring it on!”? Let’s cruise…Cruz!

I hope you believed me – because although I have NO science to back my claims (just made this up on the spot and hey, could really BE true) – Dr. Oz can’t be the only person you believe, for sure!
I used to watch Dr. Oz, back when he talked about things I could relate to. I know eating varied fruits and veggies are good, but brightly colored ones are best. NOBODY could convince me that Coconut Oil was bad for me because I grew up in the Caribbean on a daily diet of Coconut Oil! (By the way, Coconut Oil is now the rage!)
I stopped watching the good doctor when he started “promoting” products that were manufactured in the lab – as “miracle” cures.
What people did not understand is that the “cure” he was promoting is for the ailment: “How do I get rich fast?”
Oh yeah! THAT is a serious ailment afflicting many people worldwide – and many of them use the other question “How do I get thin fast?” to address their “How do I get rich fast?” dilemma.
So what about his name did not give you a clue? I heard Oz, I thought of the wizard and I remembered the curtain billowing in the wind – with a disappointment hiding behind it.
Some people heard Oz and they thought along the lines of Louis Pasteur and whomever discovered salt!
Think of it this way. Dr Oz is AHEAD of his time. The day is coming when our nutrition will come from only powders or injections. That will be after we’ve so polluted the Earth that none of the food as we know it will be safe to eat – or even be able to thrive.
Then some enterprising reporter or 8-year-old wonder kid will skim through the archives and marvel, yes MARVEL, at how naive we were to laugh at Dr. Oz and dismiss the laboratory-produced nutritional enhancements he’s peddling!
I say: let him, her or whatever gender-neutral beings we morph into by then laugh at us. For now, I’m having a real apple, a real steak, a real chocolate bar, a real vitamin – inasmuch as any of those things are really real…
Genetic modification, preservatives, hormones, farm-bred Salmon eating enriched pellets? Well – at least the animals are still alive! They wriggle. Can a pill do THAT?
Democrats are emailing supporters asking fools like me to “Share Feedback”…
One question asks:
“What would you say to another Democrat to inspire them to get involved with or contribute to this organization?’
NOTHING…to hell with it!
All you care about is the UNWIELDY piece of crap that is Obamacare…
I’m waiting for Democrats to do something about Immigration Reform, but all Democrats can do is TALK.
I have people in my family who are impacted by Immigration Reform and until you DO something about it, I will donate NOTHING…and pretty soon I will remove myself from your email list.
You are interested in Syrian victims – why don’t you ask THEM to donate?
You are interested in Obamacare – I don’t give a hoot about Obamacare!
I don’t give a damn about Food Stamps. I’m not on food stamps but people try to sell me their food stamps for half the face value!
I don’t give a damn about a government shut down, let it shut down…and pretty soon, I won’t give a hoot about Democrats either.
I’m fed up with you. I’m tired of waiting for Immigration Reform.
I’ve waited since 2007…and if President Obama lets Republicans KILL Immigration Reform and does not come up with some Executive Action for Dreamers and their parents, I will consider him and Democrats to be part of the PROBLEM…and I will spread this viewpoint, online and in my blog!
If you think Immigration Reform is something that you can keep promising and NOT deliver on…forever dangling like a perpetual carrot…you better think again!
Now you know – I hope!!! I doubt you all even READ this…
Yeah. Seriously THAT’S WHAT I WROTE to:
Communications Director of the Democratic National Committee.
I’m just sooo FED-UP WITH THEM…
The government is NOW:
Telling people WHAT to eat…
How to have sex…
What to drink…
How to wear your pants…
Prosecuting athletes for taking steroids…
Pretty soon they’ll implant a chip in your ass and ping you before you crap…so they can tell you HOW to crap!
Get off the BULLSHIT bandwagon and DO YOUR JOB!
I don’t give a damn about a government shut down, let it shut down…it needs to shut down!
I don’t give a damn about none of the important non-issues that are so important to Democrats…and pretty soon, I won’t give a hoot about Democrats either!
I’m fed up with Democrats…tired of waiting for ACTION on Immigration Reform.
Democrats are like a bunch of Jack-in-the-Boxes! Every election cycle, they jump out of the box promising Immigration Reform and NOT delivering – then they huddle behind Republican skirts to bray…and slink back INTO their box until the NEXT election.
Republicans are racist shitheads…THEY are NOT going to legalize Undocumented Immigrants. You Democrats, YOU are the ones who have to do it.
I’m beginning to believe that Democrats string people along…then leave them hanging. I suspect they laugh at us – WE the Fools who run around, at our OWN expense, to campaign – while they’re eating Wagyu rib eye and arugula salad with white Matsutake shavings at their exclusive clubs!
NOT this time. This time if you don’t understand what Presidential Power/Authority means, if you’ve NEVER heard of a: DISCHARGE PETITION, if you don’t understand that Republicans will intentionally block Immigration Reform partly to thwart YOU – then YOU can Get Lost too!!!
BOTH of you…Republicans and Democrats…can get lost!
That’s IT! I’m waiting to see WHAT happens in October…
Get your shit together! And STOP asking me FOR donations – you’ve done NOTHING for me – YET!!!
You want money? TWO Actions will DO it…
- DISCHARGE PETITION in the House of Representatives.
- Use your Presidential Authority to MAKE Deferred Action PERMANENT for both Dreamers AND THEIR PARENTS.
How the hell are you making the kids legal – they can work, drive…and their parents remain Illegal and can be deported? Again this was an election ploy, so I guess next October Jack will jump out of the box and EXTEND Deferred Action? Or just Defer it???

Or, to put it bluntly: The Emperor Has No Clothes!
Did you hear the latest news story about Romney and Republicans – how prominent Republicans are criticizing Romney for just TALKING without offering any SUBSTANCE? Who knew they had it in them?
Of course this is TYPICAL Mitt Romney – we in Massachusetts can tell that to the rest of America – and DID tell America, but did America listen? Heck NO. Republicans let Romney buy the election with his millions (Romney spent 6-million-dollars of his own money on the governor’s race in Massachusetts) because they thought those very same millions would crush Obama.
The Wall Street Journal is owned by a conservative, republican-sympathizer/donor Rupert Murdoch, who also owns Fox News. When leading conservatives feel an itch to make a point in the mainstream media, the same “mainstream media” they HATE so much, one of the places they use to express their opinion is in the Wall Street Journal.
In an editorial in the Journal Tuesday (9/11/12), conservatives wrote: “Mr. Romney’s pre-existing political calculation seems to be that he can win the election without having to explain the economic moment or even his own policies.” It is NOT democrats saying that – it is Romney’s OWN fellow Conservatives calling their party nominee’s position: “pre-existing political calculation.” Do you think that they are just finally getting it? NO, No, no.
They KNEW of his pre-existing political calculation BEFORE the primary; they KNEW about it when they turned their backs on Jon Huntsman, they KNEW about it when they embraced him at the convention. So does that make them equally guilty…because some of them like commentator George Will were never in Mitt Romney’s corner and most are still NOT in his corner!
NOW, though, they want Romney to come up with specifics! Seriously!? You want specifics from somebody who says one thing yesterday, something else today and yet a different thing tomorrow about the SAME issue. Like:
- Universal Health Care is good!
According to one website that tracks Mitt Romney’s positions on the Issues: the idea of COMPULSORY health insurance was first put forward by REPUBLICANS! The idea first came from conservative think tank The Heritage Foundation in the late 1980s, when Democrats were pushing employers to provide health insurance. Republicans (ever the protector of big business) suggested that instead of forcing EMPLOYERS to pay for the coverage why not make EVERY AMERICAN buy health insurance? And so we got the “Individual mandate”.
Naturally, with the HYPOCRISY of Republicans, THEY turned away from their own idea!!! Apparently, in the early 1990s, many Republicans championed the “Individual Mandate”. Then President Clinton came up with a plan to FORCE companies to cover employees…but Republicans KILLED it 1994.
When Mitt Romney became governor of my home state of Massachusetts (2003), HE resurrected the idea of the “individual mandate.” Under his universal insurance scheme “Romneycare” whenever a Massachusetts resident files STATE taxes, he/she MUST show that he/she has Health Insurance, wither private or state (called Mass Health) OR you face about $200 in fines.
n 2006 as then governor of Massachusetts Mitt Romney called it “A Republican way of reforming the market.” and that “To have people show up at a hospital when they get sick, and expect someone else to pay, that’s a Democratic approach.”
OK Mr. Romney…
BUT that was what he said when he was governor.
During the Republican Primary when his Republican challenger Rick Santorum pounded Romney on Health Care Reform, Mitt Romney suddenly HATED universal health care and “individual mandates”.
To win the nomination, Romney displayed what conservative republicans now call his: pre-existing political calculation and turned his back on the ONLY, the SINGLE, the ONE star in his portfolio as governor of Massachusetts and decided that the Massachusetts “model” worked just for MA but would not work for the rest of America.
So he bought the Tea Party conservative’s vote by insisting that HE, Mitt Romney would REPEAL “Obamacare” on day one of getting into the White House.
THAT WAS IN THE RECENT PAST.
Romney, having secured the Tea Party endorsement, of a tepid sort at the Republican National Convention, strayed off script this week and stated that HE will not repeal EVERY aspect of the federal health care act – Romney says he will actually KEEP some parts which are popular with Americans. Oh dear me…I can imagine the seismic gasp (sort of like Ann Romney’s collective sighs. See my August 31, post: Repackaging and Reselling Mitt Romney) that ran down the spines of hard-line Tea Party conservatives!
So where does that leave Mitt Romney today? Ask Republicans…
Their nominee’s pre-existing political calculation turned around and bit him in his (you know!). By distancing himself from health care reform in Massachusetts he has nothing left to run on since Healthcare Reform IS the SUM TOTAL of HIS MASSACHUSETTS RECORD. On Foreign Policy he’s shown there’s nothing there to talk about! So Romney decided to run on Bain Capital instead, another piece of pre-existing political calculation that also turned around to bite him in the (you know!).
So now Republicans want their golden, nah, scrap that (pun intended) their brass boy to come up with specifics. I FOR ONE CAN’T WAIT! Because the grandiose house of cards that he’s building in the sky with Paul Ryan as Atlas is sure to come tumbling down with specifics. The numbers DON’T add up. Let’s see Romney juggle them!
Why? Because I can come to you and tell you: I am going to get my parents mansion and millions of dollars pretty soon and make myself very popular until you find out that I plan to kill my parents to get those riches!
So please Mr. Romney, show me how -22 and +2 = +$20. Yes, Mr. Romney, if I owe $22 and someone gives me $2 to pay on the bill, please tell America how I end up with $22! (Unless I rob or borrow $20 from somewhere…? Is that what you are planning to do, Mr. Romney?)
Like my bro former President Bill Clinton said: “It’s Arithmetic!”
The MATH DOES NOT ADD UP – and now even conservatives in Mr. Romney’s own party are beginning to see that: THE EMPEROR HAS NO CLOTHES!
Full Text of Speech by The Honorable Deval Patrick, Governor of Massachusetts to the Democratic National Convention: Tuesday, September 4, 2012
Good evening, Democrats! Are you fired up? Are you ready to go? I hope so.
This is the election of a lifetime. Because more than any one candidate or policy, what’s at stake is the American dream. That dream—the ability to imagine a better way for ourselves and our families and then reach for it—is central to who we are and what we stand for as a nation. Whether that dream endures for another generation depends on you and me. It depends on who leads us, too.
In Massachusetts, we know Mitt Romney. By the time he left office, Massachusetts was 47th in the nation in job creation—during better economic times—and household income in our state was declining. He cut education deeper than anywhere else in America. Roads and bridges were crumbling. Business taxes were up, and business confidence was down.
Our clean energy potential was stalled. And we had a structural budget deficit. Mitt Romney talks a lot about all the things he’s fixed. I can tell you that Massachusetts wasn’t one of them. He’s a fine fellow and a great salesman, but as governor he was more interested in having the job than doing it.
When I came to office, we set out on a different course: investing in ourselves and our future. And today Massachusetts leads the nation in economic competitiveness, student achievement, health care coverage, life sciences and biotech, energy efficiency and veterans’ services. Today, with the help of the Obama administration, we are rebuilding our roads and bridges and expanding broadband access.
Today we’re out of the deficit hole Mr. Romney left, and we’ve achieved the highest bond rating in our history. Today—with labor at the table—we’ve made the reforms in our pension and benefits systems, our schools, our transportation system and more that Mr. Romney only talked about. And today in Massachusetts, you can also marry whomever you love. We have much more still to do. But we are on a better track because we placed our faith not in trickle-down fantasies and divisive rhetoric but in our values and common sense.
The same choice faces the nation today. All that today’s Republicans are saying is that if we just shrink government, cut taxes, crush unions and wait, all will be well. Never mind that those are the very policies that got us into recession to begin with! Never mind that not one of the governors who preached that gospel in Tampa last week has the results to show for it. But we Democrats owe America more than a strong argument for what we are against. We need to be just as strong about what we are for.
The question is: What do we believe? We believe in an economy that grows opportunity out to the middle class and the marginalized, not just up to the well connected. We believe that freedom means keeping government out of our most private affairs, including out of a woman’s decision whether to keep an unwanted pregnancy and everybody’s decision about whom to marry.
We believe that we owe the next generation a better country than we found and that every American has a stake in that. We believe that in times like these we should turn to each other, not on each other. We believe that government has a role to play, not in solving every problem in everybody’s life but in helping people help themselves to the American dream. That’s what Democrats believe.
If we want to win elections in November and keep our country moving forward, if we want to earn the privilege to lead, it’s time for Democrats to stiffen our backbone and stand up for what we believe. Quit waiting for pundits or polls or super PACs to tell us who the next president or senator or congressman is going to be. We’re Americans.
We shape our own future. Let’s start by standing up for President Barack Obama.
- This is the president who delivered the security of affordable health care to every single American after 90 years of trying. This is the president who brought Osama bin Laden to justice, who ended the war in Iraq and is ending the war in Afghanistan.
- This is the president who ended “don’t ask, don’t tell” so that love of country, not love of another, determines fitness for military service. Who made equal pay for equal work the law of the land. This is the president who saved the American auto industry from extinction, the American financial industry from self-destruction, and the American economy from depression. Who added over 4.5 million private sector jobs in the last two-plus years, more jobs than George W. Bush added in eight.
The list of accomplishments is long, impressive and barely told—even more so when you consider that congressional Republicans have made obstruction itself the centerpiece of their governing strategy. With a record and a vision like that, I will not stand by and let him be bullied out of office—and neither should you, and neither should you and neither should you.
What’s at stake is real. The Orchard Gardens Elementary School in Boston was in trouble. Its record was poor, its spirit was broken, and its reputation was a wreck. No matter how bad things were in other urban schools in the city, people would say, “At least we’re not Orchard Gardens.”
Today, thanks to a host of new tools, many enacted with the help of the Obama administration, Orchard Gardens is turning itself around. Teaching standards and accountabilities are higher. The school day is longer and filled with experiential learning, art, exercise and music.
The head of pediatric psychology from a local hospital comes to consult with faculty and parents on the toughest personal situations in students’ home lives. Attendance is up, thanks to a mentoring initiative. In less than a year, Orchard Gardens went from one of the worst schools in the district to one of the best in the state. The whole school community is engaged and proud.
So am I. At the end of my visit a year and a half ago, the first grade—led by a veteran teacher—gathered to recite Dr. King’s “I have a dream” speech. When I started to applaud, the teacher said, “not yet.” Then she began to ask those six- and seven-year-olds questions: “What does ‘creed’ mean?” “What does ‘nullification’ mean?” “Where is Stone Mountain?” And as the hands shot up, I realized that she had taught the children not just to memorize that speech but to understand it.
Today’s Republicans and their nominee for president tell us that those first-graders are on their own—on their own to deal with their poverty; with ill-prepared young parents, maybe who speak English as a second language; with an underfunded school; with neighborhood crime and blight; with no access to nutritious food and no place for their mom to cash a paycheck; with a job market that needs skills they don’t have; with no way to pay for college.
But those Orchard Gardens kids should not be left on their own. Those children are America’s children, too, yours and mine. And among them are the future scientists, entrepreneurs, teachers, artists, engineers, laborers and civic leaders we desperately need. For this country to rise, they must rise—and they and their cause must have a champion in the White House.
That champion is Barack Obama. That cause is the American dream. Let’s fight for that. Let’s canvass and phone bank and get out the vote for that. Let’s go tell everyone we meet that, when the American dream is at stake, you want Barack Obama in charge.
Thank you. God bless you. And God bless the United States.
This Orchard Gardens K-8 Pilot school was SO bad that when it opened the school sent out a notice to parents in their zone, like ME, inviting me to send my son there and I said no thanks. Instead, I put my son in a Boston program – METCO (that buses inner city kids to high performing suburban schools) and sent him to a town 14 miles away!
So when governor Patrick says the school was bad, IT WAS BAD. Orchard Gardens is a public housing development in Boston’s Roxbury neighborhood, in an area plagued by crime and drugs. IT IS REAL. It is not a promise in a campaign speech!!! When Romney and his running mate Mitt Ryan cut funding for the poor, this school will suffer either directly or INdirectly through welfare cuts.
I would prefer to see these kids parents’ continue to get benefits SO their kids remain in a stable enough home environment to allow them to EXCEL at school so THEY won’t be on welfare themselves…than cut welfare NOW and end up with the cycle of ANOTHER DEPENDENT GENERATION. Of course that’s the Republican way. Mishandle one problem, create two or more problems.
If your neighbor told you: “Yes, I promise. I will fix my pool. It won’t leak into your yard anymore. Trust me. I’ll do it.” Weeks pass, he does not fix it. You call the town council, (and you record that conversation this time.) Your neighbor tells officials:
“I can’t remember saying there was anything wrong with the pool. But just to be a good neighbor, of course I will look into it.” Months go by, neighbor does nothing. You go to court. You play the tape. Neighbor says, your honor: “I did not mean to say that – I misspoke. What I meant to say was….” Are you still trusting your neighbor?
Well obviously the people who STILL believe in Mitt Romney would keep believing in that neighbor. Me, I’d be done with him after that meeting with town officials!
Mitt Romney was the governor of my state for 4 years.
- When Republican Mitt Romney was running for governor of Massachusetts in 2002:
Pro-choice supporters were up in arms over Romney’s anti-abortion stance. Did Romney stand on his principles – say that’s what I believe and I’m standing by it? NO. He pandered to the PRO CHOICE groups by cozying up to them…
Romney’s platform stated: “As Governor, Mitt Romney would protect the current pro-choice status quo in Massachusetts. No law would change.” After an endorsement interview with Romney, the executive director of Massachusetts NARAL (National Abortion Rights Action League) said Romney was “emphatic that the Republican Party was not doing themselves a service by being so vehemently anti-choice.”
- When Mitt Romney was running for first the Senate (against Ted Kennedy, 1994) then later governor of Massachusetts:
Gays and gay rights supporters were up in arms. They started making noises about Romney’s anti-homosexual stance. Did Romney stand on his principles – say that’s what I believe and I’m standing by it? NO. He pandered to Gay Rights groups by cozying up to them and winning them over with his concessions.
In 1994, Romney sent a letter to the Log Cabin Republicans (the nation’s only organization of Republicans who support fairness, freedom, and equality for gay and lesbian Americans) saying that he, Romney would be a stronger advocate for gay rights in the Senate than his opponent Ted Kennedy.
Want to hear THAT again?
Romney said HE, Mitt Romney would be a stronger advocate for gay rights in the Senate than Liberal Ted Kennedy! In case you’re wondering, that is the very SAME Mitt Romney now running for president. Unless we used our bio-tech skills at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) to clone Governor Romney and it’s his clone speaking now? Heck who knows. Isn’t President Obama an alien?
According to Wikipedia, Romney stated in his letter: “We must make equality for gays and lesbians a mainstream concern.” In 2002, Romney supported domestic partnership benefits. He said: “All citizens deserve equal rights, regardless of their sexual orientation.” Romney also said that domestic partnership status should be recognized in a way that includes the potential for health benefits and rights of survivorship…
- When Mitt Romney was governor of Massachusetts:
In 2003, Romney doubled fees for court filings like marriage licensing fees, professional registrations and firearm licenses. Romney also quintupled the per gallon delivery fee for gasoline (to clean leaks from underground fuel tanks).
Here’s what he had to say about fees: “…let’s say, we’re going to be taking out an oil tank from your back yard because it’s leaking into the ground and the state’s going to provide that service. But to charge a fee sufficient to do so makes a lot of sense. So the fees ought to be adjusted from time to time to compose the amount of what the cost is of providing that service. If there hasn’t been a fee raised in a couple of decades, you probably have some inflation in there you ought to adjust for.”
- When Mitt Romney was governor of Massachusetts (2003-2007):
He championed universal health care reform – UNIVERSAL HEALTH CARE WITH A MANDATE, which the Supreme Court now says is a TAX!
When you hear Republicans talking about how bi-partisan Romney was in Massachusetts, think HEALTH CARE REFORM! Romney was so supportive of health care for ALL – so FOR it, he worked with John Kerry and Ted Kennedy to ram it through against opposition from other state democrats WHO DID NOT SUPPORT THE MANDATE.
Romney decided to tackle health care reform for two reasons:
- Romney’s buddy, Staples founder Thomas Stemberg (the same one who spoke at the 2012 Republican National Convention in Tampa, August 30) TOLD Romney to do it
- And because the federal government (under Republican president George W. Bush, 2001-2009) was threatening to CUT Medicaid payments to the state if Massachusetts did not reduce the number of uninsured people.
The Massachusetts Senate (controlled by democrats) had its OWN version of health care reform. The Massachusetts House (controlled by democrats) had its OWN version of health care reform. Romney appointed a committee and came up with his own version – WHERE HE, ROMNEY, PUSHED FOR AN INDIVIDUAL MANDATE. Repeat, Romney PUSHED for the Individual Mandate!
Romney was SO proud of the Massachusetts health care law – “Romneycare”, in his official portrait at the Massachusetts state house…he reportedly has a copy of the law sitting on HIS DESK! I guess he now wishes he could go back and air brush the portrait.
President Obama liked the Romney/Kennedy health care law so much, he used it as a model for his own health care reform (Obamacare).
- When Mitt Romney was governor of Massachusetts:
He spent so much time out of the state promoting his future (as yet undeclared) run for president that newspapers started to report on his absences. In one year, he spent 212 days or part of a day OUT of Massachusetts. He just gave up and decided that he was better off running for president instead…
Did you know that when Mitt Romney was running for governor of Massachusetts:
- He tried to show that he was an ordinary person that he was NOT out of touch by performing blue-collar jobs. Romney herded cows, he baled hay, unloaded a fishing boat and even hauled garbage.
- He ran TV ads highlighting his blue-collar work, gushing about his family (yea, the same family he’s trying to use to “humanize” him now) and even went shirtless. Massachusetts voters did not buy it – Romney dropped in the polls.
- He bounced back by attacking his opponent, Democrat Shannon O’Brien…and linking her husband to the Enron scandal.
- That Romney contributed over $6 million of his own money to his campaign for governor…
- That one of the reasons he put forward for electing him governor is that he knows how to get money from the federal government because he did it for the Utah Olympics. The same Romney who just HATES federal bailouts NOW!
Ah politics. Mr. Romney, please talk about your record in Massachusetts, we can’t hear you! Shout: “Massachusetts! Can you hear me now?”
“We’re not sure, presidential candidate Romney. We find it hard to believe it is YOU out there, promising to ‘repeal’ that universal health care mandate. Is it really YOU we’re hearing, Governor Romney?”
