John Boehner is at it again.
When will he learn to hush!!! Shhh-ush! Shouldn’t Republicans muzzle Boehner…until and unless he finds something MEANINGFUL to say…like Republican plans to get Chinese and Russian support for U.S. sanctions against Iran? Or getting U.S. allies to cooperate on terrorism WITHOUT using Water-Boarding and Sleep Deprivation? Start a discussion on SUBSTANCE, Mr. Boehner…enough of the FLUFF!
Mr. Boehner, the Republican Speaker of the House, is now railing against the President — over Obama’s travels around the country to promote a student loan bill.
Stop whining and crying, Mr Boehner. If Obama goes to states where you’re slated to be/speak…YOU GO to states where he’s slated to be/speak!
The President has been visiting North Carolina, Colorado and Iowa…dropping in at large universities and talking about Student Loan reform. We will pretend that he’s NOT campaigning. And his timing? We’ll call it politically brilliant. (Yes my head’s in the sand – one eye peeping out. I see you! Maybe…)
John Boehner is aghast. Nobody- not Senators, not Representatives, no Governors (wink!), not former Presidents – NOBODY has EVER done such a THING, such a…a…well a “pathetic” thing like that before! The very nerve of Obama to set such a precedent.
Boehner told reporters Thursday morning (4/26/2012): “For the president to make a campaign issue and then to travel to three battleground states and go to three large college campuses on taxpayers’ money to try to make this some political issue is pathetic.” (That’s it’s 3 seems particularly irksome!)
Read that again and see how silly our politicians are!
With the Secret Service Scandal widening to include possible breaches of security in El Salvador/elsewhere?, with a possible Terror Threat from al Qaeda ahead of the anniversary of Osama bin Laden’s death…this, THIS America, is what the speaker chooses to focus on. Fluff. See the problem…?
Again, he conveniently FORGETS that it could be worse. We could be scared to death…by now.
Ridge revealed in his book: “The Test of Our Times: America Under Siege…and How We Can Be Safe Again” how the Bush Administration used threats of terrorism to influence voters. Remember that? Republicans used threats of terrorism to influence voters.
(Weren’t you scared – police on the subway, airports on high alert, bomb-sniffing dogs.) They scared the hell out of us just so we’d be SUCH a freaked out, insecure mass of ectoplasm, we’d vote for them – the strong macho He-Men of Security instead of those pathetic, wimpy Democrats.
Again, poetic justice: It was a Democrat who finally nabbed bin Laden.
According to Republican Ridge: The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) was pressured to connect homeland security to the international “war on terror”. He also said he effectively thwarted a plan to raise the alert level before the 2004 election, which Bush won. Calling Mr. Boehner…hello?
Di you hear John Boehner blast Bush as “pathetic” or “opportunistic” or a “fear-monger”? Au contraire, they praised Bush for his forward-thinking zeal to keep Americans safe…even though they KNEW it was just a political gimmick.
Tell me — do you really, really want to believe these Republicans are serious?
They say Obama’s trip is a “misuse of taxpayer funds”. The Republican National Committee has actually filed a complaint with the Government Accountability Office alleging that Obama has misused Air Force One and other federal resources for electoral purposes. Gasp. Shock and Awe!
When Mitt Romney was governor of Massachusetts, (a ONE-TERM governor, mark you) he spent so much time out of state campaigning for President, that it made news!
According to online encyclopedia Wikipedia:
In 2006, his last year as governor, Romney spent all or part of 212 days* out of state, laying the foundation for his anticipated presidential campaign. The cost of the Governor’s security detail for out-of-state trips increased from $63,874 in fiscal year 2005 to a cost of $103,365 in the first 11 months of fiscal year 2006.
Romney’s use of state troopers for security during his campaign trips was criticized by former Governor Michael Dukakis, who never traveled with state troopers during his 1988 presidential run, and Mary Boyle of Common Cause who complained that “the people of Massachusetts are essentially funding his presidential campaign, whether they like it or not.”
Romney’s campaign countered by saying Romney did not accept a salary as governor (True. $135,000 a year. He gave it up. Can you afford to?) State Police say Romney did not ask for security detail on his travels, but they followed him around anyway. And I have no problem with that. He was the governor – can’t leave our governor unprotected.
*(A year has 365 days. 365-212= 153 days that Romney spent In Massachusetts as governor DURING HIS LAST YEAR IN OFFICE while laying the foundation for his Presidential camapign.)
As one MA Democrat put it: “He was governor here but we never had his full attention.”
In Jamaican vernacular: Republicans: “Wheel and come again!!! (Turn around and start anew!)

Boston Bruins goalie Tim Thomas won’t get to snub President Obama this time around.
Ever since THE Curt Schilling of Ice Hockey aired his dislike of the president in January…I’ve gone OFF him big time. I want to make a suggestion to Sports figures. I’d keep my politics out of it, if I was you.
For those of you who missed the drama, Boston Bruins Ice Hockey goalie his controversy-ness, Tim Thomas, refused to join other team members for a White House ceremony in January (2012).
The Michigan native claims that he’s: Opposed to what he called the “out of control” growth of the federal government. So when President Obama invited the team to the White House for the usual congratulatory ceremony, he turned it down.
Two other players did not go. They could very well have had similar reasons but they were smart enough NOT to Tweet/Blog or snipe about it on Facebook…far as I know.
Yes, you’re free to express your opinion, this is America and all. But remember, when you bring in the politics, you turn a lot of people off. I watch Big Pappy (David Ortiz, Boston Red Sox) and Tom Brady (New England Patriots) and Paul Pierce (Boston Celtics) and I see popular sportsmen…and I don’t know or CARE which party or President they support.
I look at Tim Thomas and I see the guy who snubbed the President!
The minute you start bringing in politics, start campaigning for a Republican or a Democrat, people begin watching YOU differently. Even team members see you differently. The coach is seeing you differently, whether he supports your stance – or the guy you just snubbed. Team members who support your political views see you differently – team members who don’t see you differently. The team owner is seeing you differently…fans see you differently. We now see you through our own prejudices.
Call it what you will, that’s human nature. And as a sports athlete, it’s best to NOT unleash these emotions in fans and potential supporters.
You may also lose endorsements too. There may be companies who are thinking of offering you an endorsement but won’t NOW because they don’t want political views associated with their products.
When a sports team wins a championship and the President of America INVITES that team to the White House it is a GREAT HONOR that only a handful of people ever get. The 99-percent of us may never visit the White House at all.
When the TEAM is invited, YOU DO NOT SHAME THE TEAM and the city by NOT going because YOU don’t like the President’s policies. He did not invite YOU, he invited THE TEAM. It’s NOT about you. Shut up! Or go and ask for Tea…if that’s your Party!
It’s about YOU if he meets you at some event and invites YOU and your family to the White House. THEN you are within your purview to say NO for whatever reason you choose, sensible or not.
People NEED to be able to MAKE that distinction and Tim Thomas could not – or would not.
“Out of control growth of the federal government – or YOUR ego, Mr Thomas? Your prejudices?
And I don’t CARE who the president is, George Bush, Barak Obama or Sarah Palin.
Can you see the Celtics invited to the White House to meet President Palin and one of them saying: “I’m not going – I can’t stand her!” No, YOU DON’T SAY THAT. If you really, really don’t want to go, don’t go. Just keep quiet. Be cool. Be smart and DON’T SHAME THE REST OF US with your nonsense.
Do you get it, Mr. Thomas. It is NOT about Democrats or Republicans, black presidents or white presidents. Deficit presidents like George Bush or surplus presidents like Bill Clinton. It is about the OFFICE of the President of the Untied States of America.
And if we don’t like the fact that it’s a BLACK person or a WOMAN or an ATHEIST holding that office that’s fine. But unless that person’s a real jerk we RESPECT the
office. Some of us don’t get it. We don’t like Obama so we demean the office. But then some sports have their demographics.
Go work on your values Mr. Thomas and may it occupy a prominent spot on your trophy wall!
Again: Feel free to express your views – just as I feel equally free to express mine. Guess neither of us LIKES the others views, but I don’t have endorsements or fans or contracts…
So NO white House visit – unless Mitt Romney wins, Tim?
Who lost now…YOU, Mr. Thomas – or the TEAM?
Take a page out of that other lovable Tim’s book. Tivo it…
PS: Re Racial Slurs
I live in Boston and I want Capitals forward Joel Ward to know that Boston is a great city. Yes we have our share of issues but please note: The few who made racial slurs DO NOT REPRESENT US HERE IN BOSTON. We congratulate you on a great game – and DO GO TO THE WHITE HOUSE if the Capitals win. Make sure you’re at the front!!!
Think of it…
Here is a “Flip-Flopping Right Wing Ideologue” (just quoting a TV pundit describing Mitt Romney) who appears to be the Republicans likely Heir…and you know, you KNOW, that many conservatives and Tea Partynistas are having a fit!
- Want to know how conservatives really feel?
Rick Santorum (who’s scheduled to meet with Romney May 04) still cannot bring himself to say outright that he supports Romney, dancing around the issue in a CNN interview last night.
- President George W. Bush made himself scarce when his dad, H.W. endorsed Romney. You got to hand it to W., he sticks to his guns…
So of course it’s already better…because they have a candidate they detest…and with reason, too.
Mitt Romney essentially declared VICTORY in the Republican Primary in New Hampshire last night (April 24)…even though there is still one candidate left in the race.
Imagine how you’d feel if YOU, as Newt Gingrich, watched Romney take the baton and fling it far over the finish line while you were still running!
Romney does appear to have the nomination sewn up. So he could have at least waited graciously for Gingrich to drop out or negotiated with him behind the scenes, BEFORE claiming victory. But Mitt Romney must be Mitt Romney. Muscle Gingrich out of the race. Crush the opponent with money, negative ads or a well-timed shove. Goodbye…
Gingrich is not feeling the love. He told ABC a couple of hours before Romney’s grand speech: “I think it’s a very substantial mistake for Governor Romney to be having, quote, ‘a general election’ speech…in New Hampshire. He’s the frontrunner but he’s not the nominee…I think it’s a little bit presumptuous. There’s a big difference between being the front-runner and being inevitable and I think he is mistaking the two.”
Gingrich will probably drop out under pressure – but, hey, let Republicans SORT their mess out.
- Meantime, Romney last night said people’s hopes and dreams have been diminished by false promises and weak leadership.
As opposed to George Bush who gave America STRONG leadership? So strong, in fact, the joke going around said Dick Cheney was the one running the show. The puppet master who reportedly elbowed out level-headed people like Colin Powell because Powell warned about foreign intervention: If you break it, you own it. Is Joe Biden running the show? If he is, we’re not hearing about it…so that at least is a plus for Obama!
Was there any hope MORE false than: “Mission Accomplished”? or has Romney forgotten? Is that mission accomplished – and just WHAT was the mission again, candidate Romney?
- Romney said: People are working harder for less.
OK Mr. Romney, I don’t know how many maids and housekeepers YOU have at all your houses. But let’s start with some of them. Charity, it’s said, begins at home – where the heart is! According to one online report, the Romney’s 2010 tax returns show his income was nearly 22 million, but he paid only 21-thousand-dollars in taxable wages for household help (to four women at ONE of the 3 homes they had) in 2010.
According to the source, the breakdown (rounded off): $5,000 for one woman, $9,000.00 another woman, $2,000.00 – third woman and $5,000.00 – fourth woman.
START the ball rolling by paying MORE. I’m not judging you, Mr. Romney. Maybe these workers worked part-time or Mrs. Romney cleaned the house herself? We speculate because the Romney campaign declined to clarify…
All that aside, HAS ROMNEY TOLD YOU HOW he’s going to ensure that YOU work harder for MORE? Be sure he explains THAT to your satisfaction before you vote!
- What else did he refer to? Single mom who feels heartbroken when she has to explain to her kids that she needs to take a second job…YES, indeed…like his wife. OH sorry, she’s NOT a single mom and I’ve already dealt with the “JOB” thing in a previous post: “Romney’s Back-Flip Flop on Work“. (You notice he did not use the term ‘work’?. He used job. Finally he gets it! But I’m sure he’ll tell you that his wife (with four helpers in one home) can sympathize with what we single moms who need 2 jobs go through.
And as for the mom and dad who never thought they’d be on food stamps — thank God Romney and Republicans DID NOT GET THEIR WAY to completely gut food stamp programs.
Just this month, Republicans pushed their BUDGET plan to CUT food stamps by $8 billion over the coming year and $34 billion over a decade. The average monthly benefit for a family of four is about $500…Democrats assailed the cuts, saying Republicans were targeting the poor while boosting the Pentagon budget above levels agreed to last summer.
Romney says he was successful in business…but he won’t also SAY he caused thousands of people to LOSE their jobs? That’s true too. Or does his Life Balance Sheet only show credits with NO debits?
He plans to get to know America’s families. He doesn’t KNOW you yet after spending much of his life in politics running for senator and governor and president? Introduce him to your gay partner and ask him why you don’t get to have the same rights he does – let him meet your illegal immigrant relative hiding in your house. Well, don’t…on second thought. Do offer him some Meat Loaf – press him to eat it. Watch him swallow. MAKE my day!!!
- Do we pay less at the pump, now?
Do we? I recall gas prices were very high under George Bush, about $5.00 a gallon when people parked their gas guzzling SUV’s and you could not EVEN TRADE IT IN? And his wife still had her Cadillacs, I presume…Back when Bush was hobnobbing with Saudi royals, his dear friends who sell us the oil?
- Easier to sell your home and buy a new one now?
It could have been, if Republicans had pushed for Oversight and REGULATED Wall Street and big banks. Republicans could have forced the issue. Then today we could say: They did try…let the records show. WHERE is their record?
- Only in America could his dad, who grew up poor, and never graduated college, pursue his dreams and be successful. Check…
And ONLY in America could a black, black man from Africa marry a white, white woman, and have a mixed race skinny little kid with a funny name…(divorced parents, raised by grandmother). Only in America could that kid drag his way up to be president. Mate…
No Mr. Romney, we are NOT stupid, though YOU keep thinking that we are!
- You will stop the unfairness of politicians giving taxpayer money to their friends businesses.
One word: HALLIBURTON. Does that ring a bell… Huge non-bid multi-million dollar contracts in Iraq? Dick Cheney…ting ting?
And above all, DON’T apologize to other nations for American wrongdoing. Not EVER. Not even when our soldiers go on killing sprees and brutally gun down innocent children. Just tell them to f— off.
A story in New York Magazine entitled: Romney’s Etch A Sketch Campaign Begins caught my eye in the Huffington Post.
Mitt Romney has apparently ALREADY started playing musical chairs with his many positions.
His latest “adjustment” seems to be on: Immigration and Student loans.
I say WATCH for Mitt Romney’s 3 DIFFERENT Campaign Strategies:
- FLIP: For during the early stages of the primaries where he’s facing other republican opponents. He’s more FOR everything his opponents stand for…and more AGAINST everything they oppose…or FOR some things they oppose and AGAINST some things they stand for.
- FLOP: To be exhibited during the late stages of the primaries where opponents have left or are thinking of leaving. He’s FOR the things he OPPOSED and OPPOSES the things he was FOR, before…
- MISSPOKES: For after the Primaries, when he’s the nominee. He’s no longer sure what he was FOR or AGAINST….
Hey, what do/did you expect…?
Watch Romney morph and evolve into his father or whatever he thinks YOU want him to be as he plays Harry Potter Politics.
Flick of wand: Wheee…watch me – I’m an Owl.
Flick, flick: Yeah, I’m a Vulture today!
Flick: And now I’m a Sparrow.
So what? They’re all birds, aren’t they?
Yes, Mr. Romney. THEY are birds. But YOU’RE not!!!
Watch him tonight, during his speech in New Hampshire, start moving from Tea to Coffee…
By the end of the Campaign he’ll be drinking Camomille!
I knew. You knew, too. Only Republicans had no clue!
If you tell House Speaker Republican John Boehner that ‘compromise’ is indeed a word…he’ll argue that the Obama people just coined the term…to draw attention away from the president’s failed economic policies.
Republicans wasted 4 years SABOTAGING President Obama’s efforts. Now, 7 months ahead of a Presidential election, Boehner is on TV saying:
“I would say that there is a 2 in 3 chance that we win control of the House again. But there’s a 1 in 3 chance that we could lose. And I’m being myself, frank, we’ve got a big challenge and we’ve got work to do.”
How does he PLAN to get Republicans to work? By crying, I guess. Because don’t expect compromise!
- Yes, lose the HOUSE
- Lose the SENATE
- And especially — LOSE the PRESIDENCY
Not because you’re Republican. That’s enough of a reason, of course — but I WANT YOU TO LOSE because of the trauma you Republicans and Tea Party-nistas inflicted on the country…in your zeal to destroy president Obama.
Do you think that by heading down a narrow, winding one lane road with a sign proclaiming “Failure for Obama” you were hurting Obama and helping America…?
How do you hurt Obama if he is a one-term president?
Of course it’s more of an ego-booster to serve two terms. But if Obama leaves the White House in January, what’s he going to lose personally that he could have saved with another 4 years in office?
- Obama is going to be much in demand everywhere, around the world
- He will make major dollars in speaking/other fees, jobs
- He won’t get MORE health care
- He won’t get MORE Secret Service protection
- He will still be in the history books as the FIRST Black President (He won’t change color after a second term!)
- Actually one less term might be better for his health!
He’ll go to his big house, with a big job, health care for life, will be able to afford the best education for his kids and will not have to worry about the day-to-day grind MOST of us have to deal with. US, the “we” in people – we’re the ones who are screwed. NOT Obama!!!
So I don’t understand HOW you’re hurting Obama by making him a one-term president? If I’m missing something here, please let me know…
THEY HAVE A PERSONAL VENDETTA AGAINST OBAMA that goes BEYOND his policies…
What Republicans have done, in their desire to hurt Obama, is HURT America.
- Do we have Immigration Reform? NO
- Do we have Tax Reform? NO
- Do we have sound Health Care Reform? NO
- Do we have a sound Energy Policy that is forward-looking? NO
- Do we have Education Reform? NO
- Social Security Reform? NO
- Medicaid/Medicare Reform? NO
What the hell do we have..? Ask Boehner…
Now he says: “…we’ve got work to do.” Wow – way to go, Mr. Speaker. You have May, June, July, August, September and October to rush through as much of the above as you can. What did you do with the other 3 years and 6 months? Republicans spent it trying to derail Obama.
The Republican Code of Intent to Crucify Obama (CICO) pronounce it as: Psycho!
- 1. Mitch McConnell (Fox News Sunday/ July 2011): Well that is true (Making Obama a one-tern President is) my single most important political goal along with every active Republican in the country…”
- Michelle Bachmann. It’s her rallying cry! (May 2011/on her website): Please make a contribution and join my money bomb to raise $240,000 in 24 hours and make Barak Obama a one-term President. — An unauthorized biography about Bachmann is titled: Let’s make Obama a one-term President. — In a speech (Feb 2011) to the Conservative Political Action Conference in Washington: “The all-important must have for 2012 is making Barack Obama a one-term president.”
- 2. Paul Ryan (Oct 2011): “The only way we can restore our prosperity and save our great nation from President Barack Obama’s failed policies is to elect conservative Republican leaders from the Court House to the White House in 2012 — and make President Obama a one-term president.“
- Rush Limbaugh (Obama Inauguration/2009): I would be honored if the Drive-By Media headlined me all day long: “Limbaugh: I Hope Obama Fails.” Somebody’s gotta say it.
- RNC: the RNC continues our efforts to make Barack Obama a one-term president.
Making Obama a One-Term President is a very worthy goal that has pushed America forward and given the country a competitive edge when it comes to technology and innovation.
That’s why when politicians leave Congress, they become lobbyists and other high-earning hot-shots in the private sector! Approve Pink Slime as your food then go work for the beef industry? Nothing wrong with that. Protest the war in Iraq? You’re a Values Underminer…
So who’s going to be working with Boehner? His Tea Party obstructionistas whom he can’t control? Boehner again: “…if Republicans were walking in lockstep, my job would be a whole lot easier.” Did he say lockstep or lockjaw?
Meantime, while Republicans like John McCain and Rudy Giuliani are chewing on Maalox tabs after endorsing Romney…Jon Huntsman, one of the BEST candidates the Republicans had in the race is now comparing the Republican Party to “communist China” and questioning the strength of this year’s presidential field. A Republican with guts! About time…
Why is it that Republicans, who love women so much, refuse to accept that families do not always fit their definition of June Cleaver* Ville bliss?
*(June Cleaver: Character from the U.S TV Sitcom: Leave it to Beaver. June and her husband are often upheld as the archetype of the 1950’s suburban parents.)
Why do Republicans believe that family issues don’t apply to unmarried women — or others?
I decided to check the meaning of “Family”. Here’s the Merriam-Webster online dictionary’s Definition of FAMILY:
1: a group of individuals living under one roof and usually under one head : household
2a : a group of persons of common ancestry : clan b : a people or group of peoples regarded as deriving from a common stock : race
4: a group of things related by common characteristics: as a : a closely related series of elements or chemical compounds b : a group of soils with similar chemical and physical properties (as texture, pH, and mineral content) that comprise a category ranking above the series and below the subgroup in soil classification c : a group of related languages descended from a single ancestral language
5a : the basic unit in society traditionally consisting of two parents rearing their children; also : any of various social units differing from but regarded as equivalent to the traditional family <a single-parent family>b : spouse and children <want to spend more time with my family>
6a : a group of related plants or animals forming a category ranking above a genus and below an order and usually comprising several to many genera b in livestock breeding (1) : the descendants or line of a particular individual especially of some outstanding female (2): an identifiable strain within a breed
7: a set of curves or surfaces whose equations differ only in parameters
8: a unit of a crime syndicate (as the Mafia) operating within a geographical area.
Origin of the word FAMILY: late Middle English: from Latin familia ‘ household servants, household, family’, from famulus ‘servant’.
Neither Webster nor the Oxford dictionary mentions marriage as necessary to define a family.
REPUBLICANS, listen up! Family does not mean a married pair of heterosexuals with a HUSBAND and a WIFE and kids. It means a grouping of ANY of them. So where does your definition of family come from? The Bible? OK. But so does: Love thy neighbor, even though he is black or Hispanic!
I then checked some figures from the U.S CENSUS BUREAU. Unless Republicans think that gays somehow got into the Census database and corrupted the figures…?

Unmarried and Single Americans Week: Sept. 19 — 25, 2010
“National Singles Week” was started by the Buckeye Singles Council in Ohio in the 1980s to celebrate single life and recognize singles and their contributions to society. The week is now widely observed during the third full week of September (Sept. 19-25 in 2010) as “Unmarried and Single Americans Week,” an acknowledgment that many unmarried Americans do not identify with the word “single” because they are parents, have partners or are widowed. In this edition of Facts for Features, unmarried people include those who were never married, widowed, or divorced, unless otherwise noted.

Obviously Republicans have REJECTED these “non-traditional” families as unworthy sinners who do not conform and measure up to their lofty goals of marriages like the Romney’s.
They don’t SEE similar stability in the Obama’s marriage…they don’t SEE values and morals in the Obama marriage. When they look at single moms and dads struggling to raise their kids or take care of parents/loved ones or when they see gay couples or any other arrangement that is not their ideal, THEY DISMISS YOU AS A BLIGHT ON THEIR ROSY UTOPIAN HOME-LIFE FAMILY SCENARIO.
They are rejecting and have always rejected YOU as untouchable!
Are you going to vote for them?
Gingrich denies he callously told his sick wife in her hospital room while recovering from cancer treatments that he would be divorcing her. (Of course that is not true, it’s a rotten rumor. President Obama is a Muslim – now THAT is fact).
Gingrich’s first set of kids are no longer his family, I take it? Ah, never mind, he has repented. Took a trip to the Middle East, walked down the Jericho Road, saw a light…and voila! Mea culpa…
When a Republicans takes multiple wives, like Newt Gingrich, married 3 times, two discarded wives – or is that discarded families, HE IS FIT TO BE PRESIDENT! Gingrich married his second wife 6 months after his divorce from wife number one. Married his 3rd wife 4 months after divorce from wife number two. Can you keep up?
(That 40-thousand-dollars a day it’s costing you, the taxpayer to provide Secret Service protection for Gingrich, could that perhaps keep several families from losing their homes?
If a family facing bankruptcy got 40-thousand-dollars to take to the bank, would that help? Help you? Think of how many days he’s been getting protection and ask yourself…? Well, choose your question. There are many…)
I ask you this question:
“Should people be able to walk into a
public library, sit at a computer and access pornography?”
I use the Boston Public Library a lot – because I LOVE BOOKS – and there is no greater resource of free and accessible books easily available to me than at the Boston Public Library (BPL)…America’s oldest public library!
The BPL was established in 1848. According to Wikipedia, it is the first publicly supported municipal library in the U.S., the first large library open to the public in the United States and the first public library to let people borrow books and other materials and take them home to read and use.
I walked into the BPL the day after the Boston Marathon, April 17… (the marathon’s finish line on Boylston Street is next to the BPL, by the way)…and was heading to the Romance Section (so I live vicariously through all these dashing Regency Heartthrobs, OK!) when I passed near the Open Access area with computers.
This is an OPEN area on the ground floor with banks of computers where library patrons can either sit and enjoy internet access for an hour at a time. a staffer told me a patron can ask for another half hour. Patrons can also stand at a bank of computers that allow access for 15 minutes at a time. You can log on again as often as you like if there are free computers.
Anyway, there was I, in a good mood: beautiful day in Boston, blue Caribbean sky, 70-degrees at least, Summer in the air in April and I’m heading to as choice of dashing heroes when I glance at a computer screen…
And a picture of a woman pops up on the wide screen – her legs spread out and she’s well…you know…having her own party! I felt a jolt/shock move through my body!
I’ve heard of people at libraries watching porn – I’ve never seen somebody at the library watching porn until now! In my head I go: “What?”
I turn to the library guard who is sitting at the library’s monitoring desk located at a slight angle over the shoulder of the guy watching the porn and I ask: “Do you see what he’s watching..?
The guard shrugs in resignation and grunts an acknowledgement…
Based on the position of the guard – HE TOO HAS TO BE SEEING WHAT THE GUY IS WATCHING. If I worked at the BPL I would not want to be sitting there monitoring the room and having to watch porn!
I talked to various library staffers, (staff do NOT seem to support the idea). Seems this ONE computer (below, with empty chair, for now) is left unblocked…and can be used to access porn.
I’m told at every BPL branch, ONE computer is left with unblocked/unfiltered internet access!
So I walk to the shelf where the romances are kept, basically in the SAME area but farther back and I look at the books, but I’m not focusing – I’m still churning inside over what I just saw – so I go look for a library person to say something, but I change my mind. I grab my selection, check it out and leave.
When I get outside, I meet a cop (one of many directing traffic ass workers dismantle the viewing stand over the marathon’s finish line) and decide to talk to him about what I saw.
I ask: “Is watching pornography allowed in the Boston Public Library? And the cop says: “YES”.
For the second time I go: “What?”
Cop says: “Allowed. Long s it’s NOT child porn!”
So anybody can walk into the Boston Public Library and sit at one of the computers in an OPEN area and watch porn to their heart’s content.
The BPL’s website lists a number of Principles:
IV) Center of Knowledge
The BPL is a center of knowledge that serves researchers, lifelong learners, and the intellectually curious through its incomparable collections, digital resources, and access to other scholarly networks.
Watching porn is very stimulating. Intellectually…
The BPL leads the way for people of all ages with recreational reading and media, invigorating programs, user-created content, and opportunities for discovery in settings that are stimulating and engaging.
More stimulation…? I think that’s enough – don’t you?
Now, hear me. I AM NOT A PRUDE. I not against porn. I’m not against people watching porn. I am even against people who choose to work in the porn industry.
But somehow, when I walk into the BPL, the first public library in America, I don’t want to see porn flashing on a screen. then I started thinking: what if it was a child, who was passing? These people are sitting in an OPEN area, where anybody can see what’s on their screen…
Shouldn’t the library BLOCK porn sites…!?
I tried once to access a web hosting site at the library – and that was blocked – but people can access porn?
Part of the library’s funding comes from the City/State.
According to the BPL website: The Boston Public Library Board of Trustees voted on March 13, 2012 to approve submission of the recommended FY13 Operating Budget to the City of Boston. The $40.2 million budget…
While the BPL Board of Trustees has approved this recommended budget, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts is still in the early stages of budget development. The Governor released his FY13 budget recommendation (H2) on January 25th and level-funded those line-items that impact the BPL, including the Library for the Commonwealth (LFC) at $2.75 million.
It is anticipated that the House of Representatives’ Ways and Means Committee will release their FY13 budget recommendation in mid-April; The Senate’s Ways and Means Committee will follow with their recommendation in mid-May.
Variances in the respective House and Senate recommendations will be resolved in a joint conference committee and will result in the FY13 Conference Committee budget to be released in mid to late June. Upon receipt of the FY13 Conference Committee budget, the Governor will have 10 days to submit his vetoes.
Does Beacon Hill KNOW that patrons can access PORN at the BPL? Do they even care? Should they?
Does the governor KNOW he can veto the budget and voila, no porn?
What does the ACLU think? Do library patrons have a RIGHT to be able to access porn?
I don’t know…
I mean use the library’s internet services to access your email, job searches, newspapers and stores, etc…but PORN?
What so YOU think, America…?
Oh the irony! I am afraid, on my own computer at home, to watch porn. I was looking for a photo for one of my blog stories this week and I clicked on an image and some naked guys popped up. Now I can’t be a hypocritical Republican. I was, well…impressed. Very impressed. I wanted to keep on clicking. But I’m so afraid that Google is tracking me…and that if I ever run for PTA anything I will be exposed, that I gave it up…
And now I learn I can go to he BPL…
